Four experiments conceived with children's responses to, and judgements of ambiguous verbal messages were presented, demonstrating that 5-to-9 year olds were more likely to respond differently to ambiguous and unambiguous messages if they were prevented from pointing at potential referents. Assessed whether counselor trainees who received discrimination training would score better on measures of counseling performance. Results showed treatment decreased the extent to which counselors questioned clients and expressed their own opinions and increased action-oriented statements aimed at encouraging client problem solving. Results from a 2 x 2 factorial design with a single control group revealed that microcounseling subjects gained significantly more in criterion performance than the control group.
