Peer reviewedFoisy, Pierre – Canadian Journal on Aging, 1995
A meta-analysis was conducted of 22 studies in which verbal stimuli were used as targets in episodic memory tasks. Of the 24 comparisons, 21 supported the hypothesis that these tasks require self-initiated operations and display a gradation of age-related deficits. (SK)
Descriptors: Aging (Individuals), Memory, Meta Analysis, Older Adults
Peer reviewedAllen, Mike; And Others – Journal of Communication, 1995
Summarizes the literature examining the association between acceptance of rape myths and exposure to pornography. States that nonexperimental methodology shows that exposure to pornography does not increase rape myth acceptance, while experimental studies show that exposure to pornography increases rape myth acceptance. Concludes that experimental…
Descriptors: Behavior Theories, Communication Research, Meta Analysis, Pornography
Peer reviewedQin, Zhining; And Others – Review of Educational Research, 1995
The relative impacts of cooperative and competitive efforts on problem-solving success were explored in a review of 46 studies. Findings from these studies were categorized by problem-solving type and subjected to a meta-analysis. Members of cooperative teams outperformed competitive individuals on the identified types of problem solving. (SLD)
Descriptors: Competition, Cooperation, Cooperative Learning, Individualism
Peer reviewedHall, Judith A.; Rosenthal, Robert – Communication Monographs, 1991
Discusses the evaluation of moderator variables in meta-analysis: (1) issues in testing theory using moderator variables; (2) when to look for moderators; (3) how not to look for moderators; and (4) how to look for moderators using contrast analysis. (SR)
Descriptors: Effect Size, Higher Education, Meta Analysis, Research
Peer reviewedHale, Jerold L.; Dillard, James Price – Communication Monographs, 1991
Highlights some of the limitations of meta-analytic knowledge claims. Illustrates their problematic consequences for later research. Details effective methods of dealing with these potential problems. (SR)
Descriptors: Higher Education, Meta Analysis, Research, Research Methodology
Peer reviewedSteiner, Dirk D.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1991
The use of meta-analysis to resolve issues in the fields of organizational behavior and human resources management was reviewed by coding 35 studies on 21 methodological variables. Results illustrate the tremendous variability in how researchers apply meta-analysis. Suggestions are provided for correctly using meta-analysis. (SLD)
Descriptors: Administration, Human Resources, Literature Reviews, Meta Analysis
Peer reviewedSilverman, Morton M. – Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior, 1993
Reviewed all English-language studies (14 foreign and 17 American) on campus student suicides. Only four single-site studies had higher suicide rate than comparable populations. Multiple-site collaborative studies done in U.S. since 1960 strongly suggest campus student suicide rate significantly less than in matched control population. (Author/NB)
Descriptors: College Students, Higher Education, Meta Analysis, Mortality Rate
Peer reviewedViswesvaran, Chockalingam; Sanchez, Juan I.; Fisher, Jeffrey – Journal of Vocational Behavior, 1999
Study 1 analyzed 68 studies, identifying three constructs: workplace stressors, strains, and social support. In study 2, models of social support in the workplace were tested, finding that social support reduced strains, mitigated perceived stressors, and moderated the relationship between stressors and strain. (SK)
Descriptors: Interpersonal Relationship, Meta Analysis, Social Support Groups, Stress Variables
Peer reviewedChater, Nick; Oaksford, Mike – Cognitive Psychology, 1999
Proposes a probability heuristic model for syllogistic reasoning and confirms the rationality of this heuristic by an analysis of the probabilistic validity of syllogistic reasoning that treats logical inference as a limiting case of probabilistic inference. Meta-analysis and two experiments involving 40 adult participants and using generalized…

Peer reviewedMarin-Martinez, Fulgencio; Sanchez-Meca, Julio – Journal of Experimental Education, 1998
Used Monte Carlo simulations to compare Type I error rates and the statistical power of three tests in detecting the effects of a dichotomous moderator variable in meta-analysis. The highest statistical power was shown by the Zhs test proposed by J. Hunter and F. Schmidt (1990). Discusses criteria for selecting among the three tests. (SLD)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Criteria, Meta Analysis, Monte Carlo Methods
Peer reviewedSpokane, Arnold R.; Meir, Elchanan I.; Catalano, Michele – Journal of Vocational Behavior, 2000
Examination of 66 congruence studies, including benchmarking studies with improved methodology, showed that congruence is a sufficient though not a necessary condition for job satisfaction. A paradigmatic shift is needed with diverse research designs and methods, emphasizing experiment and drawing on person-environment psychology. (Contains 142…

Peer reviewedViswesvaran, Chockalingam; Ones, Deniz S. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2000
Used meta-analysis to cumulate reliabilities of personality scale scores, using 848 coefficients of stability and 1,359 internal consistency reliabilities across the Big Five factors of personality. The dimension of personality being measured does not appear to moderate strongly either internal consistency or the test-retest reliabilities.…

Peer reviewedHayes, Robyn; McGrath, John – Canadian Journal of Occupational Therapy, 1998
The Cochrane Collaboration is an international project to locate, review, and disseminate information on available randomized controlled trials of health care interventions. Occupational therapists can use it to learn about best practices and evaluate research relevant to their clients. (SK)
Descriptors: Data Collection, Databases, Information Dissemination, Meta Analysis
Peer reviewedRoth, Philip L.; Clarke, Richard L. – Journal of Vocational Behavior, 1998
A meta analysis was conducted of studies examining the relationship between grade point average and salary, with salary as the dependent variable. Results suggest that grades may be meaningful predictors of current salary and somewhat meaningful for starting salary. (SK)
Descriptors: Correlation, Grade Point Average, Job Performance, Meta Analysis
Peer reviewedGorey, Kevin M.; Thyer, Bruce A.; Pawluck, Debra E. – Social Work, 1998
The effectiveness of personal versus systemic-structural social-work practice models is evaluated. Recent independent studies (N=45) are analyzed for differential findings of effectiveness. Client's focus for change (on themselves or on environmental factors) is evaluated in relation to the success of the treatment models. Research needs are…
