Whittenburg, John A.; Tice, Pamela Paradis; Baker, Gail L.; Lemmey, Dorothy E. – Journal of Child Sexual Abuse, 2001
Presents a methodological critique of the 1998 meta-analysis of child sexual abuse outcomes by Rind et al. By restricting a supposedly broad meta-analysis to only some of the population in question, the conclusions they drew regarding this complex topic, primarily that adult-child sex is not necessarily harmful, are invalid. (Contains 33…

Tice, Pamela Paradis; Whittenburg, John A.; Baker, Gail L.; Lemmey, Dorothy E. – Journal of Child Sexual Abuse, 2001
Presents a review of all types of child sexual abuse research ignored by Rind, Tromovitch, and Bauserman in their 1998 meta-analytic study. Eight major findings are addressed. Altogether these findings demonstrate the narrow focus of the meta-analysis. By restricting a broad meta-analysis to only some of the research and population in question,…

Harwell, Michael – Journal of Experimental Education, 1997
The meta-analytic method proposed by S. W. Raudenbush (1988) for studying variance heterogeneity was studied. Results of a Monte Carlo study indicate that the Type I error rate of the test is sensitive to even modestly platykurtic score distributions and to the ratio of study sample size to the number of studies. (SLD)

Loo, Robert – Journal of Education for Business, 2002
Review of 1,791 cases from 8 studies of college business students' learning styles revealed small to moderate effect sizes in style preferences. Kolb's learning styles were not evenly distributed and there was much diversity among business students and within specific majors. (Contains 22 references.) (SK)

White, W. A. T. – Education and Treatment of Children, 1988
Studies (N=25) of the effectiveness of Direct Instruction programs with special education students were examined in a meta-analysis comparison. None of the studies showed results favoring comparison groups. Fifty-three percent of the outcomes significantly favored Direct Instruction. Effects were not restricted to particular handicapping…

Misra, Anjali; Schloss, Patrick J. – Education and Treatment of Children, 1989
The critical analysis of 23 studies using respondent techniques for the reduction of excessive emotional reactions in school children focuses on research design, dependent variables, independent variables, component analysis, and demonstrations of generalization and maintenance. Results indicate widespread methodological flaws that limit the…

Hossler, Don; Scalese-Love, Patrick – Review of Higher Education, 1989
A grounded meta-analytic technique for comparing organizational interventions derived from rational-based strategies (e.g., management-by-objectives, planned change) with organizational culture-based strategies (organizational culture, climate) is described. The method is seen as useful for integrating qualitative and quantitative research.…

Rummel, Amy; Feinberg, Richard – Social Behavior and Personality, 1988
Employed meta-analysis to determine existence of the detrimental effects of extrinsic rewards on intrinsic motivation. Results showed that within strictly defined parameters the phenomenon concerning the detrimental effects of reward described in Deci's Cognitive Evaluation Theory did exist. (Author/NB)

Gagne, Francoys – Gifted Child Quarterly, 1989
A critical analysis of 13 validation studies of the use of peer nomination forms to identify gifted students indicates methodological weaknesses. A four-step plan for research on the psychometric qualities of peer nomination forms is proposed. (Author/DB)

Shaver, James P.; And Others – International Journal of Special Education, 1989
Meta analysis of 273 investigations concerned with the modification of attitudes toward persons with disabilities revealed equivocal results possibly due to methodological deficiencies (study quality ratings were low) or to the complexity of human attitudes. (Author/DB)

Allen, Mike; And Others – Human Communication Research, 1995
Examines by meta-analysis the effect that exposure to pornography produces on aggressive behavior under laboratory conditions considering a variety of possible moderating conditions. Demonstrates a homogeneous set of results showing that pictorial nudity reduces subsequent violent behavior, but that depictions of nonviolent sexual behavior and…

Vevea, Jack L.; Hedges, Larry V. – Psychometrika, 1995
When the process of publication favors studies with small p-values and large effect estimates, combined estimates from many studies may be biased. This paper describes a model for estimation of effect size when there is selection based on one-tailed p-values. (SLD)

Sawilowsky, Shlomo; And Others – Journal of Experimental Education, 1994
A Monte Carlo study considers the use of meta analysis with the Solomon four-group design. Experiment-wise Type I error properties and the relative power properties of Stouffer's Z in the Solomon four-group design are explored. Obstacles to conducting meta analysis in the Solomon design are discussed. (SLD)

Petrosino, Anthony J. – Evaluation Review, 1995
Problems and illustrations are presented from a meta-analysis of crime reduction programs. Eight criteria are specified for including studies in a meta-analysis, and some problematic studies are discussed using the criteria. Rules for handling problem studies in order to retain consistency throughout the analysis are discussed. (SLD)

Evans, James H., Jr.; Burck, Harman D. – Journal of Counseling and Development, 1992
Conducted meta-analysis on 67 studies of impact of career education on academic achievement in elementary and secondary schools.
