Rubin, Donald B. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1992
In contrast to the average effect sizes of the approach to metanalysis that can be thought of as literature synthesis, an effect-size surface is proposed as a function of scientifically relevant factors, estimated by extrapolating a response surface of observed effect sizes to a region of ideal studies. (SLD)

Cohen, Peter A. – Journal of Dental Education, 1992
Meta-analysis is proposed as an effective alternative to conventional narrative review for extracting trends from research findings. This type of analysis is explained, advantages over more traditional review techniques are discussed, basic procedures and limitations are outlined, and potential applications in dental education and clinical…

Klein, James D.; Freitag, Eric T. – Educational Technology, 1992
This study combined the concept of self-control with Keller's ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction) model of motivational design to determine whether students could be trained to make instruction relevant to themselves by using metalearning strategies. Results suggest students can be trained to do this and that this training can…

Hopkins, Kenneth D.; Gullickson, Arlen R. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1992
A metanalysis involving 62 studies compared the response rate to mailed surveys with and without a monetary gratuity. The average response rate increased 19% when a gratuity was enclosed. Other findings that substantiate that the external validity of surveys can be increased by gratuities are discussed. (SLD)

Gilpin, Andrew R. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1993
Kendall's Tau is often considered equivalent to Spearman's Rho as an ordinal measure of correlation in spite of its different metric. Formulas for converting Tau to Rho are reviewed; and a table of corresponding values is presented for Tau, Rho, and several related indices. (SLD)

Kim, Min-Sun; Hunter, John E. – Communication Research, 1993
Examines whether behavioral intentions (BI) mediate between attitudes (A) and behaviors (B). Finds A-BI correlation higher than A-B correlation, BI-B correlation higher than A-B correlation, A-BI correlation higher than BI-B correlation, variation in BI-B correlations greater than A-BI, and attitudinal relevance affected the magnitude of A-BI…

Wilkins, Brenda M.; Andersen, Peter A. – Management Communication Quarterly, 1991
Presents a meta-analysis of 25 primary research studies of managerial gender communication issues. Addresses issues of behavioral differences and research methodologies. Concludes that communication differences between male and female managers are minimal and of little social importance. Suggests the use of an interactionist perspective in future…

Lapadat, Judith C. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1991
This meta-analysis of 33 studies compared the pragmatic language skills of 825 students (ages 3-12) having language and/or learning disabilities with the skills of nondisabled peers. The students with disabilities demonstrated consistent and pervasive pragmatic deficits in conversation, which were more attributable to underlying language deficits…

Shaughnessy, Michael F. – Gifted Education International, 1990
The paper examines competing models for the thinking processes of gifted students, including the Piagetian model, the Triarchic theory of R. Sternberg, and the varieties of intelligence proposed by H. Gardner. The paper offers a meta-analysis and a six realm domain for the understanding of cognitive processing propensities in gifted students. (DB)

Gilger, Jeffrey W.; And Others – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 1991
Applies inverse Bayesian analyses to data from three large family studies of reading disability to estimate posterior probability that an offspring will be affected. Finds that offspring risk rates were significantly elevated if a parent reported a history of reading disability. Suggests the use of family history as a component in clinical…
