Toms, John G.; Brewer, James K. – Rehabilitation Literature, 1971
Presented and applied to a sample of 239 vocational rehabilitation clients is a discrete multivariate classification procedure for predicting vocational rehabilitation outcomes using several background characteristic combinations. Several cost-of-misclassification functions are proposed. (Author/KW)

Descriptors: Discriminant Analysis, Discrimination Learning, Infant Behavior, Perceptual Development
Peer reviewedOluikpe, G.C. – British Journal of Educational Psychology, 1982
Presents a table of discriminatory values for selecting test items based on mean differences in responses between upper and lower scorers in an normally distributed population. Provides a means for classifying items as poor, fair, or good. Describes a simple method for rank ordering accepted items. (Author/MJL)
Descriptors: Discriminant Analysis, Elementary Secondary Education, Evaluation Methods, Item Analysis
Peer reviewedBernard, Janine M. – Counselor Education and Supervision, 1979
Addresses the delivery of supervision skills by presenting a model for identification and training of those skills, the roles in which skills are demonstrated, and types of choices or discriminations necessary to make in tutoring trainees through the counseling practicum. (Author)
Descriptors: Counseling, Counselor Training, Counselors, Discriminant Analysis
Peer reviewedCochran, L. R. – Social Behavior and Personality, 1976
Adult subjects (N=10) were studied to determine whether inconsistent information about others produces more discrimination of people or leads to alternative ways of categorizing. Pretest-posttest indications indicated inconsistency produced more discrimination of others and alternative ways of categorizing others. (SBP)
Descriptors: Behavior Patterns, Classification, Cluster Analysis, Discriminant Analysis
Peer reviewedBeck, Hall P.; Palmer, Randall M.; Lindau, William D.; Carpenter, Paige L. – Journal of Offender Rehabilitation, 1997
Using data on 509 inmates, assessed the extent that commonly used background and psychometric variables influenced prisoner promotion to minimum security settings. Found psychopathic deviate scores to have the greatest impact. Derived a computer program to improve promotion decisions by identifying recommendations inconsistent with an inmate's…

Peer reviewedBreckenridge, James N. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1989
A Monte Carlo study evaluated the effectiveness of three rules of classifying objects into clusters: nearest neighbor classification; nearest centroid assignment; and quadratic discriminant analysis. Results suggest that the nearest neighbor rule is a useful tool for assessing the validity of the clustering procedure of J. H. Ward (1963). (SLD)
Descriptors: Classification, Cluster Analysis, Cluster Grouping, Discriminant Analysis
Peer reviewedGuttman, Louis – Psychometrika, 1988
Two discrimination coefficients, known as "disco" and "odisco," are proposed for measuring the extent of overlap in distributions as a direct function of the variance between the arithmetic means. These coefficients are related to K. Pearson's "eta" (1905) and R. A. Fisher's "F" (1950). (SLD)
Descriptors: Analysis of Variance, Computer Software, Discriminant Analysis, Equations (Mathematics)
Peer reviewedSmeets, Paul M.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1995
Examined reversal of emergent simple discriminations through stimulus contiguity. In experiment one, Baseline and Reversal phases were positive for most children. Experiments two through four examined protocol aspects that possibly contributed to successful reversal of the form discrimination; found that reversed discrimination usually was a…
Descriptors: Color, Discriminant Analysis, Discrimination Learning, Preschool Children
Peer reviewedHanisch, Kathy A. – Journal of Vocational Behavior, 1994
Results of a survey of 150 retirees showed that participating/not participating in activities and active versus less active engagement in health and family issues discriminated among those retiring for work, personal, and health reasons. Activities and planning events were important correlates of retirees' satisfaction. (SK)
Descriptors: Activities, Attitudes, Behavior, Discriminant Analysis
Peer reviewedUlrich, Dave; McKelvey, Bill – Organization Science, 1990
Tests for and identifies populations within a family of electronics industries. Data include 669 United States and 144 Japanese electronics firms. Demonstrates the relevance of a general organizational classification for explaining how different natural selection processes affect different populations. (75 references) (MLF)
Descriptors: Classification, Cluster Grouping, Demography, Discriminant Analysis
Peer reviewedCarson, Andrew D.; Bizot, Elizabeth B.; Hendershot, Peggy E.; Barton, Margaret G.; Garvin, Mary K.; Kraemer, Barbara – Journal of Vocational Behavior, 1999
Career recommendations were made based on aptitude scores of 335 high school freshmen. Artificial neural networks were used to map recommendations to 12 occupational clusters. Overall accuracy of neural networks (.80) approached that of discriminant function analysis (.84). The two methods had different strengths and weaknesses. (SK)

Peer reviewedMiville, Marie L.; Gelso, Charles J.; Pannu, Raji; Liu, Will; Touradji, Pegah; Holloway, Pauline; Fuertes, Jairo – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1999
Describes results of study of a 45-item scale developed to measure the construct and administered to four separate samples. The Miville-Guzman Universality-Diversity Scale significantly correlated in theoretically predicted ways with measures of racial identity, empathy, health narcissism, feminism, androgyny, homophobia, and dogmatism (the last…

Lagana, Maureen T. – Children & Schools, 2004
This study compared adolescents on a continuum of risk of school dropout: adolescents in the mainstream program (low risk); in an at-risk program (medium risk); and in an alternative evening program for dropouts (high risk). The researcher wanted to determine what factors predict school dropout, with particular attention given to family and social…
