Each of 434 West German and 446 American high school teachers nominated one student as highly gifted. All teachers completed a questionnaire in which they rated their nominees on 83 characteristics. When hearing raters subjectively evaluated the signed and spoken output of 25 sign language interpreters, rater agreement was between 0.52-0.86; the correlation between subjective and objective evaluation was between 0.59-0.79. The relative predictive validity of girls' and boys' success in algebra is examined. Eighth-grade students completed the Orleans-Hanna Algebra Prognosis Test.
