Peer reviewedGrabinger, R. Scott; Amedeo, Douglas – Computers in Human Behavior, 1988
Discussion of screen layout design for computer assisted instruction focuses on the perceptions of the viewers. Combinations of text format design variables that facilitate specific learning processes are investigated; evaluative criteria for text displays are discussed; individual and group perceptions are analyzed; and future research topics are…

Peer reviewedMontgomery, Allen A.; Demorest, Marilyn E. – Volta Review, 1988
This paper outlines: the importance of clinical assessment of speechreading; problems in assessment of speechreading, such as intertalker differences and lack of correlation with other traits; issues in measuring change in speechreading performance; viseme scoring on open-ended response tasks; new approaches to the speechreading assessment; and…

Follman, John – ACEHI Journal, 1993
The research on the relationship between critical thinking and verbal ability is reviewed, with emphasis on research on tests of critical thinking. The article concludes that neither critical thinking nor critical reading exist as constructs separate from verbal ability and that verbal ability accounts for test variance in these areas. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Correlation, Critical Reading, Critical Thinking, Elementary Secondary Education
Peer reviewedCornwell, John M. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1993
A comparison is made of the power and actual alpha levels of three tests of homogeneity for independent product-moment correlation coefficients using Monte Carlo methods while selectively studying sample size and varying the number of correlation reliabilities. How robust these are in applied work is discussed. (SLD)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Correlation, Error of Measurement, Monte Carlo Methods
Peer reviewedRiccio, Cynthia A.; And Others – Learning Disability Quarterly, 1994
This article reviews research specific to the relationship between learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders. Shared psychosocial and academic characteristics of the two groups are noted, along with the neurological basis of the disorders. Implications for future research on the increased specificity of the association are discussed.…

Peer reviewedSerrano, Maria Jose – Hispania, 1995
Many sociolinguistic studies validate the importance of the relationship among social variables that satisfactorily explain the correlation between linguistic and social phenomena. The intersection of sex, sociocultural level, and age initiates syntactic change that first appears in the vernacular and progresses to the accepted standard. (52…

Peer reviewedWantz, David W.; Morran, D. Keith – Journal of Counseling & Development, 1994
Hypothesis-formation skills were assessed for 40 graduate counseling students randomly assigned to training in either a divergent or convergent hypothesis-formation strategy. Findings suggest that trainees using a divergent strategy were able to formulate more comprehensive and multidimensional clinical hypotheses. Implications for training and…
Descriptors: Correlation, Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Counseling Theories
Peer reviewedMayer, John D.; And Others – Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, 1995
Presents new evidence that everyday mood does bring about a hypothesized effect on memory, termed mood-congruent memory (MCM). Results of three studies provided evidence for MCM among normal individuals (n=614). Findings support prior studies and bolster notions that mood and memory constantly covary in everyday experience. (RJM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Concurrent Validity, Correlation, Learning Processes
Peer reviewedCalahan, Charles A. – Reading Improvement, 1995
Investigates whether the psychological type of 23 female primary caregivers related to the amount of reading they will do with their children. Finds a significant correlation between the personality-temperament type of mothers and the number of books they read to their children during an eight-week period. (RS)
Descriptors: Correlation, Early Childhood Education, Emergent Literacy, Mothers
Peer reviewedPrewett, Peter N. – Psychological Assessment, 1995
The concurrent validity of 2 brief intelligence tests, the Matrix Analogies Test-Short Form (MAT) and the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test (K-BIT) with the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Third Edition (WISC-III) using a sample of 50 urban students. The MAT and K-BIT appeared equally useful as screening tests. (SLD)
Descriptors: Children, Comparative Analysis, Concurrent Validity, Correlation
Peer reviewedHimelein, Melissa J. – Psychology of Women Quarterly, 1995
In a longitudinal study, risk characteristics were examined over 32 months for 100 women in an effort to identify predictors of sexual victimization in college dating. The best prediction model contained only two variables: precollege victimization in dating was positively correlated with college victimization, and sexual conservatism was…

Peer reviewedChilders, Thomas; And Others – RQ, 1991
Reports on a project which developed a measure of levels of difficulty of reference questions handled by the California Interlibrary Reference Referral Network, and identified indicative measures that would reliably stand for the concept of difficulty. Correlations of predictive difficulty and actual difficulty are discussed. (nine references)…

Peer reviewedPentony, Joseph F. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1992
The reliability and validity of E. D. Hirsch's (1988) Cultural Literacy Test (CLT) was studied with 150 first-year college students at the University of St. Thomas in Houston (Texas). The test appears reliable, with a split-half reliability estimate of 0.93, and the cultural literacy construct and the CLT are valid. (SLD)
Descriptors: College Freshmen, Concurrent Validity, Construct Validity, Correlation
Peer reviewedGraham, John W.; Collins, Nancy L. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1991
Common approaches to examining the relationship between multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) data and variables outside the MTMM data are compared: averaging various means of each trait and estimating LISREL computer program models, and estimating only relationships between MTMM traits and the outside variables. Problems of correlational bias are…
