Peer reviewedHomatidis, Soula; Konstantareas, M. Mary – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1981
Employed a discriminant analysis with a number of instruments to determine their relative power in classifying hyperactive children. Results indicated that only nine of 27 measures used had the potential to discriminate hyperactive from normal children. Only three measures were needed in the discriminant equation for accurate classification.…

Peer reviewedLoo, Robert – Psychology: A Quarterly Journal of Human Behavior, 1980
Results of statistical analyses suggest that high lie-scorers respond honestly, and that the Lie Scale for the Eysenck Personality Inventory may reflect a personality dimension of interest rather than an extraneous and undesirable factor to be eliminated. (Author)
Descriptors: Discriminant Analysis, Multidimensional Scaling, Personality Measures, Personality Traits
Jones, Linda M.; And Others – Journal of College Student Personnel, 1980
Questions (N=40) were tested for their ability to discriminate compatible roommates. A stepwise discriminant analysis selected 15 items for inclusion in a discriminant function that, when used to reclassify pairs, was 90 percent accurate. The question that contributed most to discriminating the groups was weekday bedtime. (Author)

Peer reviewedConley, James J.; Kammeier, Mary L. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1980
Seven Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) items distinguish alcoholics in treatment from normals and psychiatric patients. These items have substantial face validity. MMPI scales developed as screening devices for alcoholism did not discriminate the alcoholics in treatment and the psychiatric patients as strongly as did these seven…

Peer reviewedBreegle, Gary G.; Tanner, C. Kenneth – Journal of Education Finance, 1979
The major purpose of this study was to identify which of 16 socioeconomic variables discriminated most effectively between districts with declining enrollments and districts with rising enrollments among public elementary and secondary schools in Tennessee. (Author/IRT)
Descriptors: Declining Enrollment, Discriminant Analysis, Elementary Secondary Education, Enrollment Trends
Blumstein, Alfred; Cohen, Jacqueline – Evaluation Quarterly, 1979
Evaluations involving nonrandom assignment to treatment or control groups are vulnerable to an accidental or intentional confounding of a selection effect with the treatment effect. Two techniques, discriminant analysis and base expectancy analysis, permit separate estimation of the selection and treatment effects in the final results. (Author/CTM)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Discriminant Analysis, Hypothesis Testing, Research Design
Peer reviewedEvans, David R. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1976
Investigates the use of the MMPI to discriminate volunteers who would become active hotline workers from those who would drop out during or shortly after training. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Discriminant Analysis, Hotlines (Public), Individual Characteristics, Measurement Instruments
Peer reviewedBryson, Noel; And Others – Information Processing and Management, 1994
Presents a microcomputer-based qualitative discriminant process (QDP) for scoring and ranking in group support systems that is relevant to group decision-making situations that involve the evaluation of alternatives. Scoring and ranking techniques are described, and a case illustration using the QDP is discussed. (Contains 50 references.) (LRW)

Peer reviewedTaylor, Dianne L.; Tucker, Mary L. – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 1995
Describes two invariance tests, the jackknife procedure and Procrustean rotation, and applies them in a discriminant analysis for this heuristic study. Invariance testing helps to prevent overemphasis on findings of statistical significance and overgeneralization of a research result, and thus is gaining favor as an indicator of result importance.…

Peer reviewedWilson, Rick L.; Hardgrave, Bill C. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1995
A study of the ability of different models--including the classification techniques of discriminant analysis, logistic regression, and neural networks--to predict the academic success of master's degree students in business administration suggests that prediction is difficult, but that classification and nonparametric techniques may be…
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Business Administration, Classification, Discriminant Analysis
Peer reviewedMalone, Linda C.; And Others – Information Processing and Management, 1991
Presents a statistical model for predicting the performance of an automated keywording system on each document it keywords. Methods of text analysis are described, including statistical methods, discriminant analysis, linguistic approaches, and artificial intelligence; performance measures are discussed; and regression models are explained. (16…
Descriptors: Artificial Intelligence, Automatic Indexing, Computational Linguistics, Discriminant Analysis
Peer reviewedYesilcay, Yasar; Akman, K. Ibrahim – Studies in Educational Evaluation, 1996
Discriminant analysis can be used in the early detection of achievers and nonachievers in a university so as to provide additional attention for these students. Results with 292 Turkish college students support the accuracy of analysis results and the use of the approach for advice and counseling. (SLD)

Frederickson, Norah L.; Furnham, Adrian F. – British Journal of Educational Psychology, 2004
Background: The outcomes of social inclusion and skills training programmes for pupils with special educational needs have been mixed. Programmes are generally based on research with mainstream samples yet it has been suggested that the social skills important for sociometric acceptance may be different for children who have special educational…

Su, Ya-Hui; Wang, Wen-Chung – Applied Measurement in Education, 2005
Simulations were conducted to investigate factors that influence the Mantel, generalized Mantel-Haenszel (GMH), and logistic discriminant function analysis (LDFA) methods in assessing differential item functioning (DIF) for polytomous items. The results show that the magnitude of DIF contamination in the matching score, as measured by the average…

Hsieh, Sumin; Hollister, C. David – Journal of Child and Adolescent Substance Abuse, 2004
This study investigates gender differences in adolescent substance abuse behavior, treatment effectiveness, and the associated relationships with pre-, during-, and post-treatment groups of variables. Analyses were performed using 6-month post-treatment follow-up data from over two thousand subjects. T-test analysis showed that females exhibited…
