Rost, Jurgen – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1990
Combining Rasch and latent class models is presented as a way to overcome deficiencies and retain the positive features of both. An estimation algorithm is outlined, providing conditional maximum likelihood estimates of item parameters for each class. The model is illustrated with simulated data and real data (n=869 adults). (SLD)

Lancy, David F. – OCSS Review, 1990
Contends that microcomputers were introduced into the social studies classrooms to teach higher order thinking skills. Maintains that computers can aid in teaching both process and content. Reviews new computer software programs and points out each programs' educational objectives and problems. Contends microcomputers are an invaluable tool of…

Muraki, Eiji – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1990
This study examined the application of the marginal maximum likelihood-EM algorithm to the parameter estimation problems of the normal ogive and logistic polytomous response models for Likert-type items. A rating scale model, based on F. Samejima's (1969) graded response model, was developed. (TJH)

Boik, Robert J. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1993
Two issues in analysis of interactions in complex linear models are considered. One is the omnibus test for interaction, and the other concerns follow-up tests when the omnibus test is significant. Reconsidered omnibus and follow-up tests are illustrated on an educational data set analyzed using the Statistical Analysis System. (SLD)

Yeo, Gee Kin; Tan, Seng Teen – Simulation & Gaming, 1999
Describes work at the National University of Singapore on the Internet in expanding a simulation game used in supporting a course in decision technology. Topics include decision support systems, multilingual support for cross-cultural decision studies, process support in a World Wide Web-enhanced multiuser domain (MUD) learning environment, and…

Klein, James D.; Doran, Martha S. – Educational Technology Research and Development, 1999
Investigates the effects of implementing individual and small-group learning structures with a computer simulation in college accounting. Results indicate students working alone expressed significantly more continuing motivation for their learning structure than did partnered students; students using extensive small-group structure exhibited…

Huppert, Jehuda; Yaakobi, Judith; Lazarowitz, Reuven – Research in Science and Technological Education, 1998
Studies the use of a computer-assisted learning simulation episode during a unit on the growth curve of microorganisms in grade ten. Finds no significant gender differences in either the experimental or control groups. Contains 25 references. (DDR)

Burke, K. A.; Greenbowe, Thomas J.; Windschitl, Mark A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1998
Contends that developing computer displays of dynamic motion offers a means to help students understand complex chemistry concepts. Describes how to set up a computer animation team, gives an example of the animation of chemical processes in a standard hydrogen electrode, illustrates how to teach with animations, recommends hardware and software…

Carel, Sheila – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 1999
Findings from a study investigating students' reactions to a hypermedia program used to analyze real-life interactions indicated that pragmatic awareness can be developed in virtual culture contact situations. Similar interactive software in combination with ethnographic activities may be more effective in culture teaching and learning.…

Pagonis, Vasilis; Drake, Russel; Morgan, Michael; Peters, Todd; Riddle, Chris; Rollins, Karen – Physics Teacher, 1999
Presents five models of the human body as a mechanical system which can be used in introductory physics courses: human arms as levers, humans falling from small heights, a model of the human back, collisions during football, and the rotating gymnast. Gives ideas for discussions and activities, including Interactive Physics (TM) simulations. (WRM)

Rueter, John G.; Perrin, Nancy A. – American Biology Teacher, 1999
Reports on research that tested the effect of using a computer simulation to teach the concept of a food web to nonbiology majors in a large introductory course. Concludes that the use of the simulation resulted in significantly better performance on an open-ended essay question for those students who used the software, particularly for average…

Strohschneider, Stefan; Guss, Dominik – Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, 1998
To examine cultural differences in planning processes, two instruments, one of which was a computer simulation, were used with 38 Brazilian and 38 German university students. Results are discussed from a functional perspective that interprets cognitive processes within their ecocultural context. (SLD)
