Envelope Curves Unify Sinusoidal Graphing
Harrow, Christopher; Merchant, Nurfatimah
Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12, v113 n4 p301-308 Apr 2020
Sinusoidal functions are difficult for students: Periodicity is a new concept, transferring information from the unit circle can be confusing, and computations with multiple solutions can be overwhelming. Many struggle with both the unfamiliar "waviness" of sinusoidal graphs and their transformations (translations, dilations, and reflections in horizontal and vertical directions). This is complicated further in non-Cartesian coordinate systems in which existing print resources typically describe polar graphs differently than their Cartesian equivalents. This article describes a simplified mindset for sinusoidal functions and their graphs that transcends coordinate systems.
