Surveys were conducted in 1975 and 1977 of humanities courses offered at two-year colleges in the United States. Studies are currently being conducted of colleges where the humanities have been strong and colleges where they have diminished. Recommendations are made for strengthening foreign language programs. Students proceeded at their own rate and were allowed repeated attempts to meet the minimal requirement of 75 percent mastery.
