Cobern, William W.; Adams, Betty A. J. – International Journal of Assessment Tools in Education, 2020
What follows is a practical guide for establishing the validity of a survey for research purposes. The motivation for providing this guide is our observation that researchers, not necessarily being survey researchers per se, but wanting to use a survey method, lack a concise resource on validity. There is far more to know about surveys and survey…

Nitodo, Hallie; Plante, Elena – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2020
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the extent to which researchers in the field of developmental language disorder are utilizing validated methods to diagnose their research participants. Method: We examined 90 research articles published from 2015 to 2019 that included English-speaking participants from the United States who were…

Martín-San Agustín, Rodrigo; Benítez-Martínez, Josep C.; Castillo-Ballesta, Lorenzo; Gacto-Sánchez, Mariano; Medina-Mirapeix, Francesc – Measurement in Physical Education and Exercise Science, 2020
Many professionals use the handheld dynamometers (HHDs) to assess isometric strength. This study aimed to evaluate the validity, reliability, and sensitivity to change of a DiCI (a new HHD) for the strength measurement of knee and hip muscles and their ratios. Thirty-five recreational athletes completed quadriceps, hamstring, and hip adductors and…

Myers, Aaron J.; Ames, Allison J.; Leventhal, Brian C.; Holzman, Madison A. – Applied Measurement in Education, 2020
When rating performance assessments, raters may ascribe different scores for the same performance when rubric application does not align with the intended application of the scoring criteria. Given performance assessment score interpretation assumes raters apply rubrics as rubric developers intended, misalignment between raters' scoring processes…

Herdem, Kevser; Ünal, Ibrahim – Research in Pedagogy, 2020
Being a significant dimension in affective behavior education, values are guiding concepts for explaining the cognitive and social structures. In the process of value acquisition, the tendency of individuals for the value being targeted for acquisition bears a great significance. In the present study, the main aim is to develop an assessment…

Design and Development of a Speech Intelligibility Test Based on Pseudowords in French: Why and How?
Lalain, Muriel; Ghio, Alain; Giusti, Laurence; Robert, Danièle; Fredouille, Corinne; Woisard, Virginie – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2020
Purpose: The current intelligibility tests performed on speakers with atypical speech production are limited by the ability of listeners to restore distorted sequences. This results in a measure that is overvalued when compared with the real articulatory performance. In this article, we present a new intelligibility test in order to neutralize the…

Lavery, Matthew; Amrein-Beardsley, Audrey; Geiger, Tray; Pivovarova, Margarita – Teachers College Record, 2020
Background/Context: The Race to the Top federal initiatives and requirements surrounding waivers of No Child Left Behind promoted expanded use of value-added models (VAMs) to evaluate teachers. Even after passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) relaxed these requirements, allowing more flexibility and local control, many states and…

The Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers-revised/follow-up (M-CHAT-R/F) was developed to reduce the number of cases requiring telephone verification. The aim of this study was to validate a Spanish version of the M-CHAT-R/F in the Spanish public health system. The M-CHAT-R/F was translated, culturally adapted, and then administered to 6625…

Caputo, Andrea; Fregonese, Chiara; Langher, Viviana – International Journal for Educational and Vocational Guidance, 2020
The purpose of this research was to develop and validate a new instrument, the Dynamic Career Scale (DCS), which measures four different modes of functioning in facing career failures and challenges (mania, envy, manic reparation, and true reparation) according to Klein's object relations theory. Two studies were respectively conducted on adult…

Ervin-Kassab, Lara; Roddick, Cheryl; Vickery, Alison; Tapper, Juliana – Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12, 2020
While participating as a mentor teacher in a professional development project, Alison Vickery, a middle school teacher, developed a strategy: claim-rule-connection (CRC). The "claim" was the answer or response to the question; the "rule" was the theorem, fact, or proof; and the "connection" was an explanation of how…

Muukkonen, Hanni; Lakkala, Minna; Lahti-Nuuttila, Pekka; Ilomäki, Liisa; Karlgren, Klas; Toom, Auli – Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, 2020
The necessity to learn competence for collaborative knowledge work during higher education (HE) is accepted widely, but continued work is required to explicate how to define and assess such competence. In this article, the development and validation of a questionnaire for assessing the development of collaborative knowledge work competence is…

Lavery, Matthew Ryan; Bostic, Jonathan D.; Kruse, Lance; Krupa, Erin E.; Carney, Michele B. – Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, 2020
Since it was formalized by Kane, the argument-based approach to validation has been promoted as the preferred method for validating interpretations and uses of test scores. Because validation is discussed in terms of arguments, and arguments are both interactive and social, the present review systematically examines the scholarly arguments which…

Villanueva, Fritzgerald – BU Journal of Graduate Studies in Education, 2020
Proponents of learning styles-based instruction recommend using learning styles inventories in school settings. One such inventory is Kolb's Learning Style Inventory (LSI). Critics, on the other hand, discourage the use of such questionnaires because of some challenges associated with learning styles-based instruction. Despite these challenges,…

Nystedt, P. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2020
We use Taylor's formula with Lagrange remainder to make a modern adaptation of Poisson's proof of a version of the fundamental theorem of calculus in the case when the integral is defined by Euler sums, that is Riemann sums with left endpoints which are equally spaced. We discuss potential benefits for such an approach in basic calculus courses.
