Barcher, Peter R. – 1976
This study examined the prediction of reading achievement for 144 second-, third-, and fourth-grade children in classrooms differing in program openness. Intercorrelations of nine cognitive and personality variables were factor analyzed, and four components representing creativity, conceptual tempo, attitude, and intellectuality were extracted.…

Edgerton, Robert B.; Bercovici, Sylvia M. – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1976
Described is a study in which 30 mentally retarded adults from the original sample of 48 in R. Edgerton's 1961 study evaluating the community adjustment of post institutionalized persons were revisited. (Author/CL)

Lloyd, Dee Norman – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1978
Background characteristics, school performance, and achievement test data were analyzed for 788 third-grade boys and 774 third-grade girls who were known later to have become high school dropouts or graduates. As early as the third grade a variety of variables were predictive of later status. (Author/JKS)

Lorton, Mary; Kukuk, Christopher – Reading Improvement, 1978
Examines the relationship between 14 social process variables and the reading performances of 180 slow learners, ages 7-15. Finds that two of those factors (brith trauma and being held back in school) emerge as predictors of reading comprehension, word recognition, and spelling. (RL)

Troutman, James G. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1978
Grades in a college freshman course in finite mathematics were predicted from IQ, high school math grades, college board scores, and high school class ranks. The squared multiple correlation for the full model was .611. (JKS)

Nicodemus, Robert B. – Studies in Educational Evaluation, 1977

Lietz, Jeremy J.; Gregory, Mary K. – Educational Research Quarterly, 1978
In a naturally integrated public elementary school, significantly more Black children were referred to the office than White children, but no differences between races were observed for exceptional education referrals. A higher proportion of males than females were referred to the principal's office for disciplinary reasons. (Author/GDC)

Julius, Marcia F.; Kaiser, Herbert E. – Journal of Veterinary Medical Education, 1978
A five-year longitudinal study was designed to find the best predictors of academic success in veterinary school at Kansas State University and to set up a multiple regression formula to be used in selecting students. The preveterinary grade point average was found to be the best predictor. (JMD)

Solomon, Daniel; Kendall, Arthur J. – American Educational Research Journal, 1977
Teachers rated the behavior of 205 3rd- and 4th-grade children on a 30-item scale. Correlations of factor scores with measures of academic achievement, creativity, inquiry skill, and various orientations, motives, attitudes, and values were investigated. Correlations suggest that teachers can validly discriminate between perseverant and…

Rothman, Kenneth M. – Journal of Youth and Adolescence, 1978
Correlations were investigated between Erikson's psychosocial crisis stages (trust, autonomy, initiative, industry, identity, and intimacy) and Marcia's four identity statuses (achievement, moratorium, foreclosure, and diffusion). Erikson's theory of prosocial development and Marcia's ego identity status concept were supported. Coping with the…

Simon, Lee S. – American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, 1978
A study sought to identify student characteristics which account for academic achievement in clinical pharmacy courses. Preclinical grade point average was the best predictor. Subscales of the California Personality Inventory and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, work experience, sex, and age were the other predictor variables. (SW)

Bridgeman, Brent; Shipman, Virginia C. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1978
Measures of self-esteem for low income children in preschool, kindergarten, and first grade contributed significantly to predictions of third grade academic performance. Achievement motivation, especially when measured prior to first grade, was also a significant predictor. (Author/GDC)
