Ashcraft, Mark H. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
Reaction time to verify property statements was examined in the context of two semantic distance factors--typicality of the category member in the subject of the statement, and dominance of the category member's property in the predicate. (Author/NCR)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Language Processing, Language Research, Memory
Tatilon, Claude – Linguistique, 1978
Gives standards for judging the translation of advertisements. The examples are French to English as well as English to French. Emphasizes readability, memorizability, and puns. (MLA)
Descriptors: Commercial Art, English, French, Language Usage
Peer reviewedNesher, Pearla; Katriel, Tamar – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1977
The paragraph unit that constitutes an addition or subtraction word problem text is discussed and the logical conditions such problems must fulfill are formulated. An attempt is then made to formulate the semantic conditions which will define well-formed addition and subtraction texts. (MN)
Descriptors: Addition, Content Analysis, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics
Peer reviewedGregory, A.; Allen, D. I. – Canadian Journal of Education, 1978
An examination of the professional self-concept of student teachers was made during the practicum in a program whose structure seemed likely to minimize its negative effects by providing for gradual transition into teaching, a high level of support from supervisors, and an extended continuous period of teaching. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Educational Research, Illustrations, Practicums, Program Descriptions
Peer reviewedStanton, Charles M. – Educational Forum, 1976
Raises several issues which impede a more fruitful discussion of programs that merge career preparation, socialization, and personal development of undergraduates; the confusion that has evolved among the terms "liberal arts college,""liberal arts," and "liberal education"; and the effects of a changing clientele on American college campuses.…
Descriptors: Curriculum, Educational Objectives, Educational Trends, General Education
Peer reviewedLin, Shou-ying – Journal of the Chinese Language Teachers Association, 1977
Based on travel to the People's Republic of China, language changes and reform are reported. New meanings of old expressions and new expressions are listed and discussed. Language reform consists of: popularization of Putonghua, simplification of the characters, and romanization of the Chinese Language. (SW)
Descriptors: Chinese, Language Planning, Language Standardization, Language Usage
Peer reviewedTrehub, Sandra E.; Abramovitch, Rona – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1978
In an attempt to clarify the role of nonlinguistic preferences in children's responses to the words more and less, children 3-4 years of age were administered three tasks. (Author/SB)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Comprehension, Intellectual Development, Language Acquisition
James, Carlton; Hillinger, Michael – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
The Bransford and Franks paradigm for the study of semantic integration is called into question. Three experiments are described that test the hypothesis that this paradigm produces its results by creating confusion and interference. The results call for continued search for a paradigm relative to the study of integration. (AMH)
Descriptors: Association (Psychology), Cognitive Processes, Language Research, Learning Processes
Tyler, Lorraine; Marslen-Wilson, William – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
A presentation of an experiment testing the claim that on-line syntactic processing is autonomous and not affected by semantic content. Results suggested that before the clause boundary is reached, syntactic decisions can be influenced by prior semantic context. An appendix containing numerous examples of clauses and probe words is included. (AMH)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Deep Structure, Language Processing, Language Research
Peer reviewedBecker, Curtis A.; Killion, Thomas H. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1977
Meyer, Schvaneveldt, and Ruddy report that semantic context has a larger effect on visually degraded words than on undegraded words. Degrading stimuli takes place by superimposing a dot pattern over letters thereby slowing information processing. Four experiments explore alternative explanations of this research finding. (Editor/RK)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Experimental Psychology, Experiments, Psychological Studies
Guenther, R. Kim; Klatzky, Roberta L. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1977
These experiments consider similarities and differences between classifications of pictorial and verbal stimuli in order to investigate whether the kinds of information used differ depending on the stimulus class. Three hypotheses regarding the information used in picture and word classification were evaluated. (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Codification, Experimental Psychology, Experiments, Hypothesis Testing
Pezdek, Kathy – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1977
This research attempts to determine whether integration of information occurs when the information is presented partly in the verbal modality and partly in the pictorial modality; in other words, does cross-modality integration occur? (Author/RK)
Descriptors: Experimental Psychology, Experiments, Illustrations, Information Processing
Peer reviewedMarcellesi, Christiane – Langue Francaise, 1976
To show the correlation between sociocultural factors and linguistic performance, a qualitative classification of the head of noun clauses as used by elementary level children is attempted. (Text is in French.) (CDSH/CLK)
Descriptors: Elementary School Students, French, Language Research, Language Usage
Postman, Leo; Kruesi, Elizabeth – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
Experiment I studied type of processing (semantic or nonsemantic) and dimension of rating (pleasantness or frequency of occurrence). Recall was higher under semantic conditions and after ratings of pleasantness. Experiment 2 showed that the difference between incidental and intentional learners increases as more stress is placed on the learning…

Peer reviewedHoward, Darlene V.; Howard, James H. Jr. – Developmental Psychology, 1977
Dissimilarity judgments of all possible pairs of 10 animal names were obtained from first-, third-, and sixth-grade children, and college students. Analysis with multidimensional scaling procedures revealed a semantic space consisting of the features of size, domesticity, and predativity. (Author/JMB)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Cognitive Development, College Students, Elementary Education
