Lichtman, Allan J.; Rohrer, Daniel M. – Journal of the American Forensic Association, 1980
Presents a theory of debate as a comparison of policy systems, a theory which satisfies the unique speech act requirements of discussing policy proposals. Describes the basic model and illustrates it by reference to the interpretation of "should" propositions and the analysis of burdens of proof. (JMF)
Descriptors: Debate, Decision Making, Logic, Models

Still, A. W.; Griggs, S. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1979
There was a significant decrease in the difference between observed and expected probabilities over the first 30 words following a stutter. Also, the two adult Ss initially increased their stuttering rate. Findings supported a combination of the anxiety and feedback models of A. W. Still and C. A. Sherrard. (Author/DLS)
Descriptors: Articulation (Speech), Conceptual Schemes, Exceptional Child Research, Foreign Countries

Durrance, Raymond E. – Journal of Education for Librarianship, 1980
Discusses the importance of a knowledge of basic statistical concepts for a librarian's education, and the problem of implementing such an introductory course. Two class exercises dealing with sampling and probability and the Central Limit Theorem are described, and 11 references are included. (BK)
Descriptors: Course Content, Course Objectives, Higher Education, Library Education

Miller, Jeff – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1979
The influence of frequency of occurrence of a visual stimulus on encoding processes is investigated, to discover what mechanisms allow cognitive processes to modify perceptual processes. Six experiments are described and the results are discussed. (MH)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Expectation, Higher Education, Probability

Hample, Dale – Journal of the American Forensic Association, 1980
Suggests that argument be seen as a private cognitive phenomenon, in contrast to the more traditional view of argument as a public message-based document. Differences between the views are noted and the respects in which argument creates and depends on cognitive order are discussed. (JMF)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Cognitive Style, Communication (Thought Transfer), Evaluation Criteria

Holt, D. – Sociological Methods and Research, 1979
Two techniques for interpretation of fitted log-linear models in contingency table analysis are discussed. The use of odds ratios as opposed to direct interpretation of the fitted model is argued for. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Expectancy Tables, Goodness of Fit, Hypothesis Testing, Mathematical Models

Ackerson, Gary E.; And Others – Reading World, 1978
Provides information concerning a procedure for estimating the probability of placement error on a criterion referenced multiple choice test. (TJ)
Descriptors: Elementary Secondary Education, Probability, Reading Instruction, Reading Tests

Siegman, A. E. – American Journal of Physics, 1979
Presents an alternative derivation of the Fokker-Planck equation for the probability density of a random noise process, starting from the Langevin equation. The derivation makes use of the first two derivatives of the Dirac delta function. (Author/GA)
Descriptors: College Science, Electricity, Higher Education, Mathematical Applications

Bauer, S. H. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1979
Emphasizes the importance of precisely defining symbols introduced in deriving relationships between experimental and/or theoretical quantities. An example of a rate constant in unimolecular reaction rate theory is given. (SA)
Descriptors: Chemical Reactions, College Science, Concept Formation, Definitions

Sullo, Pasquale; And Others – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1979
Discusses a reliability theoretic construct focusing on information produced to satisfy specified purposes or achieve preconceived objectives. When measures of system reliability and sensitivity analyses are performed, the result is a closer congruence between the objectives of the data producer and user requirements. (Author/MBR)
Descriptors: Diagrams, Information Needs, Information Networks, Information Processing

Physics Teacher, 1979
Tries to explain the attraction between unlike charged particles using electromagnetic interaction as described by the quantum field theory. (GA)
Descriptors: Atomic Theory, Electricity, Force, Higher Education

Oakley, Cletus O.; Baker, Justine C. – Mathematics Teacher, 1977
Annual records of the one-mile sun can be used to introduce a variety of statistical ideas including the scatter diagram, theoretical vs. observed values, and normal equations. (SD)
Descriptors: Algebra, Geometry, Instruction, Learning Activities

Kalman, Richard – New York State Mathematics Teachers' Journal, 1996
This article presents problems to challenge students over and above the standard curriculum problems assigned at a Course I level. Every additional problem in the article can be solved using only the tools provided by Course I. (AIM)
Descriptors: Algebra, Geometry, Graphs, Mathematics Curriculum

Johnson, John M. – Mathematics Teacher, 1997
Describes a classroom problem of probability as follows: How many people do you need in a group to ensure that the probability of at least two of them having the same birthday is greater than one-half? Answer: 23. The probability principles needed are simple enough to be accessible to advanced high school students. (PVD)
Descriptors: High Schools, Mathematical Concepts, Mathematics Instruction, Mathematics Materials

Edwards, Thomas G.; Hensien, Sarah M. – Teaching Children Mathematics, 2000
Describes how three experiments suitable for upper-elementary students can be used to foster classroom discourse in which students begin to explore probability. (KHR)
Descriptors: Communication (Thought Transfer), Discourse Analysis, Elementary Education, Mathematics Activities
