Benson, Gerald P.; Weigel, Daniel J. – Educational Research Quarterly, 1980
School records of 643 ninth-grade students were examined. Classroom adjustment was measured by the Classroom Behavior Inventory. Results indicated that mobility was negatively related to math achievement and adjustment. Results are discussed in relation to the peer society and the use of these data for schools. (Author/RL)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Arithmetic, Grade 9, Junior High Schools
Wrege, Rachael; And Others – Popular Computing, 1982
Describes the software modules produced by Texas Instruments for use with the TI-99/4A home computer. Among the modules described are: Personal Real Estate, Programing Aids, Home Financial Decisions, Music Maker, Weight Control and Nutrition, Early Learning Fun, and Tax/Investment Record Keeping. (JL)
Descriptors: Arithmetic, Computer Programs, Input Output Devices, Merchandise Information
Maggs, Alex; And Others – B. C. Journal of Special Education, 1979
The three-year Australian study, Follow Through, measured the effects of direct instruction with 103 children (kindergarten or year one) of which 55 were Aboriginal. (DB)
Descriptors: Arithmetic, Ethnic Groups, Foreign Countries, Language Acquisition

Harper, Eon – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1980
There were 120 pupils in years 1 to 5 from two schools which were interviewed using specially prepared tasks to study the variety of interpretations given to letters by adolescents. Results indicate that two distinct conceptual understandings of the role played by a letter in relation to geometrical data exist in pupil's thinking. (Author/TG)
Descriptors: Algebra, Arithmetic, Concept Formation, Elementary Education

Dimitrovsky, Lilly; Almy, Millie – Journal of Psychology, 1980
Investigated the degree to which early conservation is predicted of later arithmetic achievement by examining the relationship between performance on a conservation task at the beginning of kindergarten and arithmetic achievement towards the end of the second grade. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Achievement, Arithmetic, Children, Conservation (Concept)

Friedling, Carol; O'Leary, Susan G. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1979
Eight seven- and eight-year-old hyperactive children were assigned to either a self-instructional training group or an attention practice control group. On-task behavior in the classroom and performance measures in reading and arithmetic were assessed. (Author/SBH)
Descriptors: Arithmetic, Elementary Education, Exceptional Child Research, Hyperactivity

Fast, Gerald R.; Hankes, Judith Towne – Ohio Journal of School Mathematics, 1997
Supports teachers in resolving problems of teaching long division. Discusses an approach focusing first on modeling the partition process with base-10 blocks and having students come to a conceptual understanding of the standard long division algorithm. Evaluation of the approach concluded that it helped students conquer the division concept. (ASK)
Descriptors: Arithmetic, Concept Formation, Division, Elementary Education
DeFranco, Thomas C.; Curcio, Frances R. – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1997
Discusses an exploratory study that examines student interpretation of remainders in division as applied to word problems in a restrictive school setting and in a real-world, out-of-school setting. Concludes that students lack the ability to map computational results to the real-world context. Contains 16 references. (DDR)
Descriptors: Arithmetic, Context Effect, Division, Elementary Education

Koontz, Kristine L.; Berch, Daniel B. – Mathematical Cognition, 1996
Children with arithmetic learning disabilities (n=16) and normally achieving controls (n=16) in grades 3-5 were administered a battery of computerized tasks. Memory spans for both letters and digits were found to be smaller among the arithmetic learning disabled children. Implications for teaching are discussed. (Author/CMS)
Descriptors: Arithmetic, Cognitive Processes, Elementary Education, Elementary School Students

Taverner, Sally; Wright, Martin – Educational Research, 1997
Attitudes, academic intentions, and attainment of students gaining a grade in A-level (Advanced level) mathematics were compared for those who followed a modular course and those assessed at the end of two years of study. Overall, the final grades of those assessed modularly were half a grade higher. (JOW)
