Reardon, Robert; Loughead, Teri – Journal of Counseling and Development, 1988
Assessed equivalence of paper-and-pencil and computer versions of the Self-Directed Search (SDS) for 62 college students. The results showed a significant positive correlation in SDS scores for the two SDS forms; however, users strongly preferred the computer format. (Author)

Lewis, Charles; Sheehan, Kathleen – Machine-Mediated Learning, 1988
Introduces a theoretical framework for mastery testing, using Item Response Theory and Bayesian Decision Theory. The idea of sequential testing is developed, with the goal of providing longer or shorter tests as needed, and a computerized application to a hypothetical professional knowledge examination is discussed. (Author/LRW)

Ford, B. Douglas; And Others – Computers in Human Behavior, 1996
Describes a study of 52 male inmates in Ontario (Canada) that was conducted to compare paper-and-pencil versus computer-based formats of the State-Trait Personality Inventory, the Anger Expression Scale, the Belief Scale, and the Vengeance Scale. The validity of assessments of incarcerated individuals regardless of administration modality is…

Laatsch, Linda; Choca, James – Psychological Assessment, 1994
The authors propose using cluster analysis to develop a branching logic that would allow the adaptive administration of psychological instruments. The proposed methodology is described in detail and used to develop an adaptive version of the Halstead Category Test from archival data. (SLD)

Sandals, Lauran H. – Canadian Journal of Educational Communication, 1992
Presents an overview of the applications of microcomputer-based assessment and diagnosis for both educational and psychological placement and interventions. Advantages of computer-based assessment (CBA) over paper-based testing practices are described, the history of computer testing is reviewed, and the construct validity of computer-based tests…

Cudahy, Edward; Link, H. Cynthia – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1991
A computerized hearing aid measurement system using simulated input and output compression hearing aids was compared to a manual technique using conventional laboratory instrumentation. Results matched closely, but the computer system was considerably more flexible and easier to use. (Author/DB)

Kyllonen, Patrick C. – Intelligence, 1991
The experience of developing a set of comprehensive aptitude batteries for computer administration for the Air Force Human Resources Laboratory's Learning Abilities Measurement Program resulted in the formulation of nine principles for creation of a computerized test battery. These principles are discussed in the context of research on…

van der Linden, Wim J. – Psychometrika, 1998
This paper suggests several item selection criteria for adaptive testing that are all based on the use of the true posterior. Some of the ability estimators produced by these criteria are discussed and empirically criticized. (SLD)

Kunnan, John Antony – Annual Review of Applied Linguistics, 1999
This survey of recent developments in language testing offers a broad view of the field by focusing on significant developments that have occurred in the last half decade, including theoretical developments, practical developments, and recent resources. (Author/VWL)

Chalhoub-Deville, Micheline; Deville, Craig – Annual Review of Applied Linguistics, 1999
Provides a broad overview of computerized testing issues with an emphasis on computer-adaptive testing (CAT). A survey of the potential benefits and drawbacks of CAT are given, the process of CAT development is described; and some L2 instruments developed to assess various language skills are summarized. (Author/VWL)

Baker, E. L.; Mayer, R. E. – Computers in Human Behavior, 1999
Examines the components required to assess student problem solving in technology environments. Discusses the purposes of testing, provides an example demonstrating the difference between retention and transfer, defines and analyzes problem solving, and explores techniques and standards for measuring the quality of student understanding. Contains…

Neuman, George; Baydoun, Ramzi – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1998
Studied the cross-mode equivalence of paper-and-pencil and computer-based clerical tests with 141 undergraduates. Found no differences across modes for the two types of tests. Differences can be minimized when speeded computerized tests follow the same administration and response procedures as the paper format. (SLD)

Vispoel, Walter P. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1998
Compared results from computer-adaptive and self-adaptive tests under conditions in which item review was and was not permitted for 379 college students. Results suggest that, when given the opportunity, most examinees will change answers, but usually only to a small portion of items, resulting in some benefit to the test taker. (SLD)

Russell, Michael – Education Policy Analysis Archives, 1999
Examined the effect of taking open-ended tests on computers and on paper for students with different levels of computer skill using items from the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System and the National Assessment of Educational Progress for 287 middle school students. Results suggest a large effect of mode of administration on student…

Chen, Ssu-Kuang; Hou, Liling; Dodd, Barbara G. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1998
A simulation study was conducted to investigate the application of expected a posteriori (EAP) trait estimation in computerized adaptive tests (CAT) based on the partial credit model and compare it with maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). Results show the conditions under which EAP and MLE provide relatively accurate estimation in CAT. (SLD)
