Towse, Raymond J.; Garside, Peter – Journal of Geography in Higher Education, 1998
Discusses software and logistical issues and proposed solutions in the development of a system for delivery of flexible and distance-based learning using a computer-assisted learning module and computer-based testing. Assesses initial evaluative responses to the new system and to this mode of learning in general. (DSK)

Coniam, David – CALICO Journal, 1997
Describes the process for generating, from a text, three types of multiple-choice vocabulary cloze tests: one based on n-th word deletion, one using user-specified frequency ranges, and one based on a particular word class. The article discusses the extent to which good test material can be produced realistically by computer-aided systems and the…

Bartlett, James E., II; Reynolds, Katherine A.; Alexander, Melody W. – Journal of Online Learning, 2000
Discusses online testing using the inQsit[C] Web-based software system, a system that enables an individual to create an assessment module, administer that module to gather responses, and perform simple analyses with responses. Describes how to create an online test using inQsit[C]; administering the test; grading the tests; concerns/problems…

Vispoel, Walter P.; And Others – Applied Measurement in Education, 1994
Vocabulary fixed-item (FIT), computerized-adaptive (CAT), and self-adapted (SAT) tests were compared with 121 college students. CAT was more precise and efficient than SAT, which was more precise and efficient than FIT. SAT also yielded higher ability estimates for individuals with lower verbal self-concepts. (SLD)

Segall, Daniel O. – Psychometrika, 1996
Maximum likelihood and Bayesian procedures are presented for item selection and scoring of multidimensional adaptive tests. A demonstration with simulated response data illustrates that multidimensional adaptive testing can provide equal or higher reliabilities with fewer items than are required in one-dimensional adaptive testing. (SLD)

Gretes, John A.; Green, Michael – Journal of Research on Computing in Education, 2000
Reports on the use of computerized practice tests in an undergraduate education course. In study one, students who took computerized practice exams averaged one-half letter grade higher than students who did not take computerized practice exams, and they exhibited positive attitudes toward their practice experiences. Study two replicated study one…

Clark, Linda – Educational Leadership, 2005
When an Idaho school district initiated computerized adaptive testing, it discovered that all the growth occurring in the district was limited to the lowest-achieving students. The more proficient students, which included both gifted and above-average learners, showed little or no growth. The assessment data showed a weak curriculum that tended to…

Heap, Nick W.; Kear, Karen L.; Bissell, Chris C. – European Journal of Engineering Education, 2004
A well-designed assessment strategy can motivate students, and help teachers and institutions to support deep learning. In contrast, inappropriate forms of assessment may promote surface learning, and will therefore fail to support the true goals of education. Recent theories of learning stress the value of dialogue, negotiation and feedback.…

Goddard, H. Wallace; Dennis, Steven A. – Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, 2004
The authors of this article discuss customizing parent education which requires customized assessment. At Auburn University, Kreg Edgmon and Wally Goddard developed a parent assessment based on the National Extension Parent Education Model (NEPEM) (Smith, Cudaback, Goddard, & Myers-Walls, 1994). All items in the parent assessment were tested with…

Kormos, Judit; Denes, Mariann – System: An International Journal of Educational Technology and Applied Linguistics, 2004
The research reported in this paper explores which variables predict native and non-native speaking teachers' perception of fluency and distinguish fluent from non-fluent L2 learners. In addition to traditional measures of the quality of students' output such as accuracy and lexical diversity, we investigated speech samples collected from 16…
