Alienation is viewed as a relatively stable and enduring characteristic of individuals. Significant correlations were found between the alienation scale, administered before matriculation, and three indices of adjustment in the freshman year (i.e., the adjustment scale, an activities checklist, and attrition). Two-point and three-point methods of classifying Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) profiles were compared using 174 students who sought psychological treatment at a student mental health clinic and who generated MMPI profiles with scales 2.7, and 8 as their highest evaluations. Coed undergraduates were assigned to three groups: a talk about daydreaming emphasizing its adaptive qualities, attention control, or a no treatment control.
