Peer reviewedHanna, Gerald S.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1983
Work sample aptitude test items and questionnaire items on past and predicted grades each contributed to the predictive efficiency of the Orleans-Hanna Algebra Prognosis Test in forecasting algebra grades for 2,684 eighth grade students. (Author/PN)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Algebra, Aptitude Tests, Grade 8
Brooks, Terrence A. – Library Research, 1982
A sample of library-output statistics measuring circulation, reference, and in-library use was collected from 76 libraries and tested for redundancy, correlation, and variation using time-series analysis to test the Relative Fidelity of Measurement Model (RFM). The 275 sample statistics correlated in an unpredicted pattern. Twenty-three sources…
Descriptors: Correlation, Library Circulation, Library Research, Library Services
Peer reviewedSilliphant, Virginia M. – Psychology in the Schools, 1983
Compared performance of kindergarten children (N=52) on reasoning, visual-motor integration, and verbal development to achievement scores in kindergarten, second grade, and third grade. Results showed relationships between reasoning in kindergarten and achievement on two tests in second grade, but not between kindergarten visual-motor integration…
Descriptors: Abstract Reasoning, Academic Achievement, Cognitive Development, Kindergarten Children
Peer reviewedArnold, Ree K. – Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, 1983
A technique for evaluating the relationship between game statistics and outcomes of contests is proposed. The technique can be used to determine the relationship between selected game factors and winning or to determine how often various results of certain instances of play occur in a contest. (PP)
Descriptors: Athletics, Evaluation Criteria, Evaluation Methods, Games
Peer reviewedIngenkamp, K.; Wolf, B. – British Journal of Educational Psychology, 1982
Two studies of the oral secondary school leaving examinations in Germany indicated variances in ratings made by different teachers. The differences were significantly influenced by speed of speaking, background information about past achievement, and contrast of performance related to sequence of presentation. (Author/MJL)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Examiners, Experimenter Characteristics, Foreign Countries
Peer reviewedGarvin, Joan – Journal of Drug Education, 1982
Fifth- and sixth-grade students (N=600) were assessed regarding smoking activity, parents' smoking, four dimensions of self-esteem, and attitudes toward school. Multivariate analyses showed students were more likely to begin smoking if they had parents who smoked, had low self-esteem, and disliked school and feared failure. (Author)
Descriptors: Childhood Attitudes, Elementary Education, Intermediate Grades, Measures (Individuals)
Peer reviewedPalmore, Erdman B. – Gerontologist, 1982
Studied predictors of longevity among 252 panelists in a 25-year longitudinal study of aging. The strongest independent predictors for men were health self-rating, work satisfaction, and performance intelligence; for women they were health satisfaction, and physical function rating. (Author)
Descriptors: Aging (Individuals), Followup Studies, Gerontology, Individual Differences
Peer reviewedThompson, Linda; Spanier, Graham B. – Journal of Marriage and the Family, 1983
Examined the circumstances surrounding marriage termination in relation to the aftermath of marital separation. Collected data from a nonprobability sample of 205 individuals. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that 41 percent of the variance in acceptance of marital termination can be explained by marital history variables. (Author/RC)
Descriptors: Divorce, Emotional Adjustment, Family Attitudes, Marital Instability
Peer reviewedChang, Gerald Y-S; Brown, James M. – Journal of Studies in Technical Careers, 1983
Fifty-six students from two Minnesota technical institutes were administered the Minnesota Reading Assessment and the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Tests. Statistical analysis indicates that, while the two tests are not identical measures of vocabulary and comprehension, their measures of reading rate and speed are highly correlated. (SK)
Descriptors: Community Colleges, Correlation, Multiple Regression Analysis, Postsecondary Education
Peer reviewedArens, Diana Antos – International Journal of Aging and Human Development, 1982
Analyzed national survey data to discern differences in the effects of widowhood on the well-being of older men and women. Data supported an overall decline in well-being of widowed persons, but a direct effect of widowhood was substantial only for the negative dimension of the well-being of women. (Author/RC)
Descriptors: Economic Factors, Employment, Older Adults, Physical Health
Peer reviewedParasuraman, Saroj – Journal of Vocational Behavior, 1982
Assessed the relative influence of personal, attitudinal, and behavioral variables on behavioral intentions and voluntary turnover among nonsupervisory plant workers. Results show that personal variables have little direct effect on turnover; rather, their influence on turnover is channeled through their effects on behavioral intentions. (Author)
Descriptors: Behavior Patterns, Employee Attitudes, Individual Characteristics, Job Satisfaction
Peer reviewedDeBoer, George E. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1981
A path analytic model is hypothesized and tested to explain the effect of a series of intellective and nonintellective student attributes on high school achievement and college achievement. Patterns of predictability for male and female students are compared. (Author/GK)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Academic Aptitude, Higher Education, Hypothesis Testing
Peer reviewedKohl, David F. – Journal of Academic Librarianship, 1982
Presents and discusses the results of a study undertaken at Washington State University to determine whether different subgroups of the library collection had different loss and misshelving rates and, if so, whether the worst problems could be predicted from circulation data. Two tables present the data from the study. (Author/JL)
Descriptors: Academic Libraries, Facility Inventory, Library Administration, Library Circulation
Peer reviewedLocksley, Anne – Journal of Marriage and the Family, 1982
Examined two explanations for the strong relationships between indices of social class and characteristics of marital attitudes and behavior. Results indicated that, education aside, neither female nor male occupational groups differed with respect to 14 indices of marital attitudes and behavior. Education emerged as a major predictor. (Author/RC)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Attitudes, Behavior Patterns, Divorce
Wood, Keith; Robinson, Paul J. – Essence: Issues in the Study of Ageing, Dying, and Death, 1982
Demonstrates that within a group of highly actualized individuals, the degree to which "own death" is integrated into constructs of self is a far more powerful predictor of fear of death than actualization. Findings suggest that actualization and integration are independent in their overall effect on fear of death. (Author)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, College Students, Death, Fear
