Peer reviewedBernstein, Bianca L.; And Others – Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development, 1987
Examined relationships among client's race, the type of problem for which a client is seeking counseling, and the client's preference for counselor characteristics. Results indicated that the patterns of preferences for counselor race did not seem to differ between black and white participants on the basis of type of client concern. (Author/ABB)
Descriptors: Black Students, College Students, Counselor Characteristics, Counselor Client Relationship
Peer reviewedAllen, Walter R. – Journal of Negro Education, 1985
Found low intercorrelations among social involvement, academic achievement, and occupational aspiration in a national sample of Black undergraduates attending predominantly White, State-supported universities. Suggests that future research on Black student success should explore factors internal to the person, institutional characteristics, and…
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Black Students, College Students, Higher Education
Peer reviewedZajonc, R. B. – Review of Educational Research, 1986
This article finds the empirical review of the intellectual effects of family factors by Lala Carr Steelman wanting because (1) it is selective and incomplete; (2) it ignores systematic aggregate effects; (3) it imposes linear analysis on nonmonotone relationships; and (4) it disregards most of the confounds identified by Steelman as crucial.…
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Birth Order, Educational Research, Effect Size
Peer reviewedSteelman, Lala Carr – Review of Educational Research, 1986
The author responds to criticism by R. B. Zajonc on a review of the extant literature on the intellectual consequences of sibship size and birth order. (Author/LMO)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Birth Order, Educational Research, Effect Size
Peer reviewedHearne, J. Dixon; And Others – Educational Research Quarterly, 1987
Male and female junior high school students were administered the recently published Computer Aptitude, Literacy, and Interest Profile, and their composite scores were compared to cumulative mathematics subscales of the Stanford Achievement Test, Advanced Form E. Results showed that mathematics achievement was significantly associated with…
Descriptors: Aptitude Tests, Computer Literacy, Interest Inventories, Junior High Schools
Peer reviewedRadencich, Marguerite C.; Baldwin, R. Scott – Bilingual Review, 1985
Explores the relative contributions of global vocabulary and specific attribute knowledge to the metaphorical comprehension of fluent and less fluent adult users of English. Results indicate that, for both groups, specific attribute knowledge was a better predictor of metaphorical interpretation than global vocabulary knowledge. (Author/CB)
Descriptors: Adults, Cognitive Processes, Cultural Background, Cultural Context
Peer reviewedLovett, Maureen W. – Child Development, 1987
Accuracy-disabled and rate-disabled young Canadian readers were compared to children who were "fluent normal" readers. Children in the latter group decoded at the same level of accuracy as the rate-disabled subjects but at a significantly faster rate. Specific deficiencies of each of the disabled groups were identified. (Author/RH)
Descriptors: Children, Definitions, Foreign Countries, Individual Differences
Peer reviewedBroodbooks, Wendy J.; Elmore, Patricia B. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1987
The effects of sample size, number of variables, and population value of the congruence coefficient on the sampling distribution of the congruence coefficient were examined. Sample data were generated on the basis of the common factor model, and principal axes factor analyses were performed. (Author/LMO)
Descriptors: Factor Analysis, Mathematical Models, Monte Carlo Methods, Predictor Variables
Peer reviewedAbraham, Roberta G.; Plakans, Barbara S. – TESOL Quarterly, 1988
Iowa State University explored the reliability of the Educational Testing Service's Speaking Proficiency English Assessment Kit (SPEAK) and an in-house tool as a good predictor of acceptable classroom performance by nonnative English-speaking teaching assistants and studied the relationship between the assistants' background characteristics and…
Descriptors: English (Second Language), Graduate Students, Higher Education, Language Tests
Peer reviewedWebster, William J. – Journal of Educational Research, 1988
The article describes a series of studies that was implemented over a five-year period to validate a teacher selection system which demonstrated important relationships between measured teacher verbal and quantitative ability and quality of classroom instruction. The need to validate personnel interview and essay techniques is discussed.…
Descriptors: Elementary Secondary Education, Employment Interviews, Predictive Validity, Predictor Variables
Peer reviewedDavey, Beth – Journal of Experimental Education, 1988
The contribution of passage variables, question types, and format variables to reading comprehension was assessed for 50 successful and 50 unsuccessful readers. A three-stage conditional regression assessed the predictability of 20 predictor features on item difficulty scores. The location of response information and stem length accounted for…
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Difficulty Level, Elementary Secondary Education, Predictor Variables
Peer reviewedKennedy, Eugene – Journal of Experimental Education, 1988
Ridge estimates (REs) of population beta weights were compared to ordinary least squares (OLS) estimates through computer simulation to evaluate the use of REs in explanatory research. With fixed predictors, there was some question of the consistency of ridge regression, but with random predictors, REs were superior to OLS. (SLD)
Descriptors: Computer Simulation, Error of Measurement, Estimation (Mathematics), Least Squares Statistics
Khaleel, Ibrahim Adamu – Educational Technology, 1988
Describes the spiral interactive program evaluation model, which is designed to evaluate vocational-technical education programs in secondary schools in Nigeria. Program evaluation is defined; utility oriented and process oriented models for evaluation are described; and internal and external evaluative factors and variables that define each…
Descriptors: Developing Nations, Educational Assessment, Evaluation Criteria, Evaluation Methods
Koohang, Alex A. – Educational Communication and Technology Journal, 1987
Discussion of attitudes of pre-service teachers toward the use of computers focuses on a study of 60 college students at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, which examined the relationship between selected variables (gender and prior computer experience) and computer attitudes (anxiety, confidence, and liking). Recommendations based on the…

Peer reviewedLevy-Shiff, Rachel; Israelashvili, Ruth – Developmental Psychology, 1988
Using data from Israeli first-time fathers and mothers collected during pregnancy and while the infants were nine months old, regression analyses showed that personal and contextual sources were almost equally influential in determining the various aspects of fathering. Suggests that personal variables influence transfer of quality from the…
