A longitudinal study of 80 toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergartners found that children who entered early in low quality care had the most difficulty with peers in preschool. Lives of parents who used low quality care were characterized by complexity and use of less appropriate socialization practices than those used by other parents. (RH)

The ontogeny of school failure (SF) was studied by examining characteristics of 112 first graders, 63 of whom were considered at risk for SF. Measures of achievement, intelligence, behavior, language, and learning potential were used with cluster analysis. Development of SF was a more complex phenomenon than unitary factors suggested. Finds that, among 2,397 heads of poor Southern households in the March 1986 Current Population Survey, race and education were significant determinants of employment status in metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas, respectively. Data from a study of 70 student teachers suggest that success on the NTE Core Battery tests is more closely related to required college course work than to student teaching performance. In addition, the tests screen out more physical education majors than most other secondary majors. (IAH)

A study of 424 allied health students (259 dental hygiene, 104 radiologic technology, and 61 respiratory therapy) found that the greater predictors of their academic success were the natural science subscore on the American College Test (ACT), high school grade point average, and class rank, age, and composite ACT score. Relationships among locus of control, academic program, and sex of 267 ninth-graders were studied. As hypothesized, students in the advanced level program were more internally controlled than were general or basic level students. Findings of this qualitative/quantitative study indicate that experiences other than prolonged work stress may lead to burnout.
