Hodges, Daniel L. – Focus on Productivity, 1982
To aid instructors in teaching their students to use effective methods of memorization, this article outlines major memory methods, provides examples of their use, evaluates the methods, and discusses ways students can be taught to apply them. First, common, but less effective, memory methods are presented, including reading and re-reading…

Levin, Joel R. – 1979
A review of the literature on the function of pictures in prose learning indicates that visual illustrations are helpful to children's learning, but that visual imagery has inconsistent effects on prose learning, although it seems to have potential for assisting those with adequate word recognition but low comprehension. A conceptual framework has…

Scott, L. Carol; Goetz, Elizabeth M. – 1978
The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of game-like learning activities, as compared to rote memorization procedures, on preschool subjects (n=8) recitation of their home telephone numbers. A rhyming mnemonic memory device was incorporated into the game procedures. A group design was used with a pretest-training-posttest…

Nelson, Anah M. – 1970
The relationshp between success in learning to read and success in drawing tasks that used the same varieties of perception needed in learning to read was investigated. Ten tasks involving perceiving presented forms, memorizing them, and reproducing them in drawing were given to 150 children. These tasks were related to position in space,…

Sitaram, N.; Weingartner, Herbert – Science, 1978
The effects of particular drugs in human memory abilities was examined. The degree of memory enhancement produced by arecholine and choline and the impairment after scopolamaine were inversely proportional to the subject's performance in placebo; that is, "poor" performers were more vulnerable to the drugs than were "good" performers. James, Carlton; Hillinger, Michael – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
The Bransford and Franks paradigm for the study of semantic integration is called into question. Three experiments are described that test the hypothesis that this paradigm produces its results by creating confusion and interference. The results call for continued search for a paradigm relative to the study of integration. (AMH)

Mueller, Christian; Watkins, Michael – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
A description of four experiments confirming the theory that recall of a given item from a semantically categorized list is impaired by the presence of other items from this same category. This inhibitory effect of part-set "cuing" is interpreted here as a cue-overload effect. Selected references are included. (AMH)

Reed, Adam – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
The introduction of laboratory computers has facilitated investigation of quantitative theories in the investigation of memory. Data from a recent qualitative study was used to test two quantitative theories. The strength-resistance theory fitted the data quantitatively without significant deviations. Statistical tables and references are…

Johnson, Ronald E.; Scheidt, Barbara J. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1977
An attempt was made to identify comparable subjective subsequences in the serial learning of a prose passage and to examine the relationship of such organizational encodings to the variable of structural importance. Results of serial learning and free recall indicated learners associatively organized individual prose subunits into subjective…

Fraser, David – College and Research Libraries, 1985
Suggests that since great deal of memorizing takes place in libraries, librarians are in good position to study question of which strategies are most effective in processing which media, and perhaps, to contribute to what little is known about effectiveness of individual memory strategies during the transfer process.
