Greitzer, Frank L. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1976
In two experiments on free and cued recall, spacing between categorically related items, presentation rate and category size were varied and the effects on recall of items as a function of their serial order were studied. Results suggest subjects organize material during acquisition by retrieving and rehearsing previously studied items. (CHK)

Marfo, Kofi; Ryan, Robert F. P. – Alberta Journal of Educational Research, 1990
Among 48 fourth graders, average readers were superior to poor readers in recall performance, use of memory strategies, and awareness of own memory processes (metamemory). However, both groups demonstrated little strategic sophistication. Across groups, significant correlations were found among strategy use, metacognitive knowledge, and recall…

This study with 56 learning-disabled adolescents found that intensive generalization training specific to the development of complex mnemonic strategies was demonstrably more effective in recall at 1-day and 2-week intervals than a rehearsal condition. No added advantage was gained by adding attribution training to the mnemonic generalization…
