2025 National First-Year Students and Their Motivation to Complete College Report: Data and Insights on the Challenges and Opportunities for Completing a College Degree, Based on an Analysis of Nearly 62,000 First-Year College Students
Ruffalo Noel Levitz
This report provides insights that can help colleges and universities understand how to best serve their students. These findings present a student perspective on the challenges and factors affecting their motivation to succeed, along with directions on how institutions can respond with timely and relevant actions. The findings in this report are based on data collected in 2024 from 61,747 student records of first-year students who completed an assessment in the Ruffalo Noel Levitz (RNL) Retention Management System (RMS), a suite of three early-alert assessments that measure non-cognitive indicators in students: (1) Incoming students: College Student Inventory (CSI); (2) Students at the middle of the first year: Mid-Year Student Assessment (MYSA); and (3) Students entering year two: Second-Year Student Assessment (SYSA). This year's findings focus on the incoming student results from the College Student Inventory and are broken down by institution type. A deeper analysis of participants identifying as first-generation college students is also provided.
