Wardlaw, Kirk A.; Kroll, Neal E. A. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1976
Names of cities were shock associated and then embedded in material presented to the nonattended channel in a dichotic listening and shadowing situation. A test for conditioning followed the dichotic listening task. Comparisons are made with other studies of galvanic skin responses to unattended words. (Editor/RK)

Belfiore, P. J.; Dattilio, Frank M. – Behavioral Disorders, 1990
This review analyzes the origin and maintenance of self-injurious behavior, focusing on the areas of operant contingencies, sensory contingencies, and/or biological variables. It discusses definitions, prevalence, and etiology. A hypothesis is forwarded which includes components from both the operant and biological domains to explain the origin of…

Dunklee, Nancy R. – Exceptional Parent, 1989
The process of toilet training a boy with Rubinstein-Taybi Syndrome is addressed. Emphasized are the joint effort of the teacher and parents, the frustration at the seeming lack of progress, the use of rewards and "positive practices," and the ultimate success of the boy's toilet training program. Prins, David; Hubbard, Carol P. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1988
Experimental studies are reviewed in which stuttering and speech disfluency were subjected to response contingent stimuli (RCS). Research issues are discussed, including response-stimulus contiguity, subject awareness, behavior definitions, stimulus control of responses, subject variability, effects of RCS on nonstuttered speech parameters,…

Fisher, Wayne; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1992
This study found that, compared to measuring approach behaviors to a variety of stimuli, a forced-choice stimulus preference assessment used with four young children with severe mental retardation resulted in greater differentiation among stimuli and better predicted which stimuli would result in higher levels of responding when presented…

Seyffer, Charles – School Planning and Management, 1999
Discusses how to spot indoor air quality (IAQ) problems in schools and possible actions to take to eliminate them. Highlights the types of pollutants that contribute to IAQ deterioration and the physical symptoms commonly associated with them, and suggests ways of addressing older heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to improve air…

Buskist, William; Miller, Erin; Ecott, Cheryl; Critchfield, Thomas S. – Teaching of Psychology, 1999
Offers an example of determining what the experts of psychology deem as essential concepts in their subfield by investigating the current principles in operant conditioning through surveys of the board of editors of the "Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior." Recommends concepts that are appropriate for up-to-date coverage of operant…

Trent, C. Curtis; Trent, Warren C. – School Business Affairs, 1996
A major source of indoor air contamination in schools originates within the heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems (HVAC), with draw-through systems being the worst offenders. Lists provisions for designing an HVAC system and a set of criteria to adhere to when planning new construction or renovations. (nine references) (MLF)

Weir, Catherine; Soule, Sarah; Bacchus, Catherine; Rael, Jennifer; Schneider, Jennifer – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 2000
Observational reinforcement was studied in 5- to 13-month-old infants in a contingency learning task where brief light-sound stimulation followed touches on a canister. The task was preceded by differing preexperiences for each of four study groups. Overall, results demonstrated that vicarious reinforcement in the preexperiences probably did not…

Silva, Francisco J.; Yuille, Ruhiyyih; Peters, Lisa K. – Teaching of Psychology, 2000
Presents a method for illustrating the continuity of behavior during schedules of reinforcement, focusing on a demonstration on computer-controlled movement tracking. Discusses how this method can be used to illustrate and stimulate discussion about topics such as the acquisition of operant behavior. (CMK)

McComas, Jennifer J.; Wacker, David P.; Cooper, Linda J. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1998
A study examined the effects of a high-probability procedure on the compliance with medical procedures of a toddler with developmental delays and self-injurious behavior. Compliance to low-probability requests occurred more frequently following compliance to high-probability requests, suggesting that this procedure may be useful across different…
