This paper presents the development of a new measure of locus of control for adults, the Internal Control Index. Analysis of a field test and a junior college administration indicated an estimated reliability of .84, the presence of a strong principal component, two replicable factors, and evidence for convergent validity. The hypothesis that students who cheat will externalize the cause of this behavior was tested by contrasting the causal inferences of cheating and noncheating college students. Compared female business owners, managers, and secretaries to examine predictors of occupational choice, satisfaction, and success in the self-employment of women.
