The effects of formal and informal instructional processes upon adult college students' cognitive and affective states, as well as their classroom behaviors, were studied. Emergent reading attempts of 24 children at the beginning of their kindergarten year are content analyzed in light of theoretical considerations about general and language development. Teachers', parents', and peers' standards were found to each have a positive and significant effect on the time secondary students spent on homework.
