Peer reviewedPartington, Gordon Geoffrey – History Teacher, 1980
Discusses controversies concerning the use of generalizations in history. Generalizations lead to national stereotypes and confusion over definitions. Concludes, however, that historical understanding requires criteria to determine what in general may be of importance to the human condition. Classificatory or labeling generalizations are…

Peer reviewedHandleman, Jan Sheldon – Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders, 1981
The investigation assessed the generalization of verbal behavior by autistic type children (aged 5 to 12 years) across different settings. (Author)
Descriptors: Autism, Generalization, Language Acquisition, Transfer of Training
Peer reviewedBenoit, William Lyon – Quarterly Journal of Speech, 1980
Examines the concept of example in Aristotle's inventional theory. Rejects recent claims that the example reasons from part to part, without a mediating generalization, and then explicates Aristotle's view of the example. (JMF)
Descriptors: Generalization, Induction, Persuasive Discourse, Philosophy
Cassidy, Michael; Medsker, Karen – Performance Improvement Quarterly, 2003
Discusses the need to provide evidence when making claims, particularly when reporting research results. Suggests evidence should be precise; be wary of generalizations; question authority; and link the manuscript together in a coherent manner. (LRW)
Descriptors: Generalization, Research Methodology, Research Reports, Technical Writing
Peer reviewedBeretvas, S, Natasha; Meyers, Jason L.; Leite, Walter L. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2002
Conducted a reliability generalization study of the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (D. Crowne and D. Marlowe, 1960). Analysis of 93 studies show that the predicted score reliability for male adolescents was 0.53, and reliability for men's responses was lower than for women's. Discusses the need for further analysis of the scale. (SLD)
Descriptors: Adolescents, Generalization, Meta Analysis, Prediction
Peer reviewedNilsson, Johanna E.; Schmidt, Christa K.; Meek, William D. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2002
Explored variability in reliability scores on a career scale, the Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy Scale (K. Taylor and N. Betz, 1983). Of the 49 studies examined, 41% reported score reliabilities. Of the five subscales, Problem Solving shows the lowest score reliability. Higher score reliability is associated with age, racial/ethnic…

Peer reviewedWallace, K. A.; Wheeler, A. J. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2002
Examined the score reliability of a measure of life satisfaction, the Life Satisfaction Index (LSI) using 34 research studies. Results reveal an average reliability of 0.79. Results provide evidence for adequate reliability of LSI scores across a variety of sample characteristics, but they must be interpreted with caution given the small sample…

Peer reviewedGannon, Gerald E.; Martelli, Mario U. – Mathematics Teacher, 2000
Presents a generalization to the classic prisoner problem, which is inherently interesting and has a solution within the reach of most high school mathematics students. Suggests the problem as a way to emphasize to students the final step in a problem-solver's tool kit, considering possible generalizations when a particular problem has been…

Peer reviewedHenson, Robin K.; Thompson, Bruce – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 2002
T. Vacha-Haase (1998) proposed her "reliability generalization" methodology to characterize (a) typical score reliability for a measure across studies, (b) the variability of score reliabilities, and (c) what measurement protocol features predict the variability in score reliabilities across administration. The present article provides…

Peer reviewedNewell, K. M.; And Others – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1988
Three subsidiary issues are discussed that raise further questions about the generality of conclusions regarding the effects of massed and distributed practice on the learning of motor skills: (1) duration of practice; (2) learning-performance distinction; and (3) data synthesis and theory development. (JD)
Descriptors: Drills (Practice), Generalization, Learning Theories, Psychomotor Skills
Peer reviewedKail, Robert; Park, Young-Shin – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1990
Massive practice on mental rotation of letters resulted in substantial change in speed of mental rotation of 11 and 20 year olds. Change in rate of mental rotation was characterized by hyperbolic and power functions. (RH)
Descriptors: Children, Cognitive Ability, Generalization, Reaction Time
Peer reviewedStoddard, Lawrence T.; McIlvane, William J. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1989
Two-year-olds discriminated two original training stimuli nearly perfectly, thereby showing that some form of controlling stimulus-response relation had been established. Most children's generalization gradients had little or no slope. Results are not consistent with earlier generalization data from young children. (RH)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Discrimination Learning, Generalization, Toddlers
Peer reviewedAlexander, Ralph A. – Personnel Psychology, 1988
Addresses issue of range enhancement effects on correlations, asserting that, while adding to or deleting from sample can affect variance and correlation in sample, increases or decreases in individual differences in intact sample resulting from such factors as history, maturation, training, and experience will not necessarily affect correlations.…
Descriptors: Generalization, Participant Characteristics, Research Problems, Sampling
Peer reviewedEnns, James T.; Akhtar, Nameera – Child Development, 1989
Subjects of 4, 5, 7, and 20 years of age performed a speeded classification task designed to isolate sources of interference in visual selective attention. While subjects of all ages were unable to avoid processing distractors, older subjects were better able to inhibit distractor processing. (RH)
Descriptors: Adults, Attention, Children, Individual Development
Peer reviewedPoulson, Claire L.; Kymissis, Effie – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1988
Effects of modeling and contingent praise on infant's motor response topographies were experimentally analyzed. Three male 10-month-olds showed systematic increases in targeted training and probe response topographies after introduction of the modeling and praise treatment procedure. Thus generalized imitation with infants was demonstrated. (RH)
