Single sample approximations are considered for the cross-validation coefficient in the analysis of covariance structures. Results of a random sampling experiment--using data from ability tests administered to high school students (sample sizes 100, 400, and 800)--illustrate the coefficient and adjustment for predictive validity. The construct and predictive validities of the Perceptual Ability Test (PAT) were examined. The results indicate that each of the subtests exhibits different predictive validity. A linear combination of PAT subtest scores was found to be more predictive of first-year dental school technique performance than the total PAT score. (Author/MLW)

Findings from a longitudinal study which examined the stability of reading attitude from early childhood to the middle-adult years suggest that reading attitude is a stable construct over time, although early childhood measures of reading attitude are poor predictors of adult attitude. Relationships among self-efficacy, self-esteem, personal goals, and performance over multiple performance trials were examined for 215 college students. Self-efficacy was significantly predictive of personal goals and performance, but self-esteem was not. Results indicate that the more task-specific the measure, the better the prediction. (SLD)

A meta-analytic review was conducted on published studies examining the relationship between performance on the quantitative and verbal components of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and graduate grade point average. The assumption called PIRC (proportional item response curve) was tested in which PIRC was used to predict item scores of selected examinees on selected items.
