Peer reviewedKochanek, Thomas T.; Hennen, Florence – Special Services in the Schools, 1988
Two measures used for early detection of learning problems (Preschool Screening System and Denver Articulation Screening Exam) were tested for their predictive validity. Educational placement at the end of grade one was examined and compared to pre-kindergarten test scores on the two measures. Analysis found both measures to be valid. (Author/MSE)

Peer reviewedFrick, Theodore W. – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 1989
Demonstrates how Bayesian reasoning can be used to adjust the length of computer-guided practice exercises and computer-based tests to help make mastery or nonmastery decisions. Individualization of instruction is discussed, and the results of an empirical study that used the sequential probability ratio test (SPRT) are presented. (25 references)…

Peer reviewedBoshier, Roger – Australian Journal of Adult Education, 1990
Refutes MacLean's critique of two instruments: the Education Participation Scale and the Personality and Educational Environment Scale. Major arguments center on sample size, predictive validity, reliability, deficiency and growth motivation, research methodology, and inclusion of up-to-date research. (39 references) (SK)

Peer reviewedJones, Ethel B.; Jackson, John D. – Journal of Human Resources, 1990
Data from a sample of 811 workers who received an undergraduate business degree were analyzed to determine the relationship between grade point average and subsequent earnings. A significant positive relationship was found, for women as well as men, and the relationship was evident for the first job after graduation as well as five years later.…

Peer reviewedCziko, Gary A. – Educational Researcher, 1989
Argues that the complex human behavior studied by educational researchers is by its nature unpredictable if not indeterminate. Concludes that research should focus on descriptions and interpretations of educational phenomena and not on the prediction and control of educational outcomes. (FMW)
Descriptors: Behavior, Educational Research, Essays, Outcomes of Education
Peer reviewedShechtman, Zipora – Teaching and Teacher Education, 1989
This study examines the contribution of assessments of interpersonal behavior to the prediction of initial teacher success. Findings indicate that the widely used predictor of cognitive ability has limited predictive power. Evaluations of interpersonal skills, including oral intelligence, significantly contribute to the prediction of success in…

Peer reviewedMcEvoy, Robin E.; Johnson, Dale L. – Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences, 1989
Finds that the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence and the Florida Kindergarten Screening Battery were highly similar as predictors of future reading ability for 59 5-year-old, low income, Mexican-American children. Perceptual performance subtests in both measures correlated better with reading ability than verbal subtests. (SV)
Descriptors: Elementary Education, Elementary School Students, Measures (Individuals), Mexican Americans
Peer reviewedJoyce, Bonnie G.; Wolking, William D. – Rural Special Education Quarterly, 1988
Evaluates the criterion validity of a curriculum-based assessment (CBA) to identify gifted children in rural areas. Compares CBA and standardized test scores for 286 kindergarten and first grade children. Concludes that the instruments' predictive validity is equivalent, but the CBA has practical advantages for rural school districts. 25…

Peer reviewedFimian, Michael J.; And Others – Library and Information Science Research, 1989
Describes the development of the Media Specialist Stress Inventory (MSSI), designed to examine the degree to which stress variables can be used to predict burnout levels of school library media specialists. The results of tests of the reliability and validity of the MSSI are presented and discussed. (31 references) (CLB)

Campbell, Clifton P.; Hatcher, Timothy G. – Performance and Instruction, 1989
Discussion of testing methods that adequately measure the ability to perform manipulative tasks focuses on criterion-referenced performance tests (CRPT) to evaluate trainees. Topics discussed include predictive validity; physical fidelity; test construction; testing constraints; performance conditions; criteria for attainment standards; scoring…

Peer reviewedSmittle, Pat – Community College Review, 1995
Describes a study examining the usefulness of both comprehensive assessment models (utilizing computerized placement tests, high school grade point averages [GPAs] and rank, and student characteristics) and reduced models for predicting community college GPA. Suggests that comprehensive measures, including both academic and nonacademic variables,…

Peer reviewedPearson, Barbara Z. – Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences, 1993
College grade point averages after 4 semesters and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores were compared for 200 Hispanic (predominantly Cuban American) and 892 non-Hispanic White students at the University of Miami. Mean SATs were significantly lower for Hispanic students (about 45 points on average, both verbal and math), despite equivalent…

Peer reviewedVan Whitlock, Rod; Lubin, Bernard – Journal of Offender Rehabilitation, 1998
DWI offenders (N=123) referred to treatment who remained drug and alcohol free for six months posttreatment are well distinguished from those returned to court by the Anxiety, Depression, and Sensation Seeking, scales and the composite Dysphoria scale of the Multiple Affect Adjective Check List-Revised administered at intake.
