Durr, Catrina R.; Lahart, Therese E.; Maas, Renee M. – 1999
This report describes a program for developing and improving critical thinking skills in adolescents in order to prepare them for life-long learning. The targeted population consisted of high school math and social studies students from two middle-class communities located in northern Illinois. The students' lack of critical thinking skills was…

Peer reviewedHeller, Patricia M.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1989
Investigates the effects of two context variables on the performance of seventh-grade students on a qualitative and numerical proportional reasoning test. Explores the nature of the relationships between rational number skills, qualitative reasoning about ratios, and numerical proportional reasoning. (Author/YP)
Descriptors: Abstract Reasoning, Formal Operations, Grade 7, Problem Sets
Peer reviewedNiaz, Mansoor – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1989
Investigates the effect of cognitive style on the performance of college students on proportional reasoning tasks. Reports that students having proportional reasoning can be misled by the presence of field effects and that there was a significant correlation between the test of field independence and the items of proportional reasoning. (Author/YP)
Descriptors: Abstract Reasoning, Cognitive Style, College Science, Field Dependence Independence
Ben-Chaim, David; And Others – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1989
Examines the relationship between visualization and the middle school mathematics curriculum. Gives an overview of where and how visualization interacts with the curriculum. Investigates the role of visualization in developing inductive/deductive and proportional reasoning. (YP)
Descriptors: Formal Operations, Junior High Schools, Logical Thinking, Mathematics Curriculum
Peer reviewedLawson, Anton E.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1991
The constructivist hypothesis that the acquisition of domain-specific conceptual knowledge (declarative) requires the use of general procedural knowledge was tested. Students (n=314) were classified as reflective, transitional, or intuitive thinkers and presented with four concept-acquisition tasks. Skill in hypothetico-deductive reasoning…

Peer reviewedDimant, Rose J.; Bearison, David J. – Developmental Psychology, 1991
College students were assigned to either dyadic or individual problem-solving conditions and were given a series of formal operational tasks. Dyadic subjects solved more problems during the interaction phase than did individual subjects. Among dyadic subjects, interactions were associated with problem solving and pre-to-posttest gain scores. (BC)

Peer reviewedFlieller, Andre – Developmental Psychology, 1999
Administered five Piagetian tests to 180 adolescents for comparison to similar samples from 1967 and 1972. Found that today's adolescents exhibited higher levels of cognitive development than did previous cohorts. Gain varied across tasks, being very large for combinatory thought but mixed for conservation. This acceleration of cognitive…

Sinnott, Jan D. – 1987
This paper discusses the utility of a general systems theory paradigm for psychology. The paradigm can be used for conceptualizing such complex phenomena as change over time in living systems, person-society interactions, and the epistemology of multiply determined changes. Consideration is also given to applications of the approach to…

Sunal, Dennis W. – 1988
Research involving cognitive modification and using intervention instruction in general prerequisite cognitive processes has shown that significant and long-term results are possible. Use of intervention instruction involving prerequisite data gathering skills with teachers has been successful in improving ability to use probing questions in…

Bitner-Corvin, Betty L. – 1988
The purposes of this descriptive-predictive study were to investigate the logical and critical thinking abilities of a sample of sixth through twelfth grade students (N=173) and to determine whether logical thinking processes are predictors of critical thinking abilities and academic achievement. The instruments administered in this study were (1)…

Peer reviewedOnocha, C. O.; Okpala, P. N. – Journal of Education for Teaching, 1987
This study investigated the formal reasoning ability and the relationship between reasoning ability, sex, and age of 600 preservice primary teachers in Nigeria. Findings are summarized. (MT)

Peer reviewedFischbein, Efraim; Schnarch, Ditza – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1997
Describes a study that investigated probabilistic intuitions held by students (N=98) from grade 7 through college through the use of a questionnaire. Of the misconceptions that were investigated, availability was the only one that was stable across age groups. Contains 20 references. (DDR)

Peer reviewedNiaz, Mansoor – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1989
Investigated was the relation between student ability to translate sentences into equations, equations into sentences, and student performance in formal operational reasoning, proportional reasoning, and introductory-level chemistry. Results indicate that students who lack formal operational skills may experience problems in the translation of…

Peer reviewedLawson, Anton E.; Thompson, Lois D. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1988
Explores the relationships between seventh-grade students' misconceptions of genetics and natural selection and four cognitive variables: reasoning ability; mental capacity; verbal intelligence; and cognitive style. Reports that only the reasoning ability was significantly related to the number of misconceptions. (Author/YP)
Descriptors: Biology, Cognitive Ability, Formal Operations, Genetics
Peer reviewedLawson, Anton E. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1992
Reports a study of 922 college students that classified the students based on performance on formal operational reasoning tasks. Students were also administered seven logic tasks. Response patterns were analyzed and found to be similar to patterns derived from the multiple-hypothesis theory of advanced scientific reasoning and different from those…
