Kaznowski, Andrzej – Studia Anglica Posnaniensia, 1973
The subject of a semantic sentence-forming process is discussed. It is suggested that the concept of agency should not be treated on a par with the concept of the objective. The hypothesis is confined to simple intransitive and transitive sentences. (Available from: See FL 508 214). (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Deep Structure, Form Classes (Languages), Linguistic Theory, Semantics

St. Clair, Robert; Park, Cynthia – Linguistics, 1974
Some of the irregular verbs in the present indicative of Spanish are analyzed and described, and regular verbs are reviewed. (RM)
Descriptors: Articulation (Speech), Consonants, Generative Grammar, Grammar
Newman, John – Acta Linguistica Hafniensia, 1974
Levelling processes in the history of the German verb paradigm from Old High German to the present are discussed. It is asserted that the theory of transformational generative grammar provides a proper framework for the study of linguistic change. (RM)
Descriptors: Deep Structure, Diachronic Linguistics, German, Linguistic Theory
Shapiro, Michael – Acta Linguistica Hafniensia, 1974
Focuses on behavior of Russian stems with regard to vowel/zero alternations. Explanations are in terms of surface manifestations, and reservations about generative grammar are expressed. (RM)
Descriptors: Deep Structure, Generative Grammar, Grammar, Japanese

D'Angelo, Frank J. – College Composition and Communication, 1974
A method for analyzing connected discourse beyond paragraph length is demonstrated. (JH)
Descriptors: Essays, Generative Grammar, Language Patterns, Rhetorical Criticism

Hammerly, Hector – Modern Language Journal, 1975
The question whether second languages should be taught by the deductive or inductive method is discussed, and an argument is made for a middle ground between the two extremes. (RM)
Descriptors: Deduction, Induction, Language Instruction, Learning Processes
Qvarnstrom, Bengt-Olof – 1978
This examination of Richard Montague's grammar as it is manifested in his study, "The Proper Treatment of Quantification in Ordinary English" (PTQ) proposes that the theory contains significant flaws and raises fundamental methodological questions about the aims of logic and linguistics. The first part of this discussion presents the…

Rochemont, M.; Culicover, P. – 1987
An analysis of English sentences containing noun phrases (NPs) with extraposed complements argues that the extraposition (EX) is base-generated and not derived by any applications of the Move-alpha principle. A Move-alpha analysis is subject to substantial technical difficulties, and there exist cases of EX for which there is no plausible source…

Barganz, Robert A. – Visible Language, 1974
Investigated the use of an intermediate level of orthographic representation based upon the theoretical framework of transformational-generative grammar. (RB)
Descriptors: Elementary Education, Grade 5, Orthographic Symbols, Phonemes
Starosta, Stanley – Langages, 1975
It is argued that too much attention to deep structure has led to neglect of surface realizations. Case relations and case forms are studied as well as the relationships between the two. (Text is in French.) (AM)
Descriptors: Case (Grammar), Deep Structure, Form Classes (Languages), Generative Grammar

Chan, Stephen W. – Journal of Chinese Linguistics, 1974
Examines several subtypes of the verbal sequency NP-VP1-VP2 in Chinese, especially those involving descriptions of human action, directed motion, and instrumental functions, and finds that these could be subsumed under the heading of "purposive clauses." The VP1 states an action whose goal is fulfilled by the action performed in VP2. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Chinese, Deep Structure, Descriptive Linguistics, Generative Grammar

Ruhlen, Merritt – Linguistics, 1975
Argues that Saltarelli's rules of Ellipsis and Consonant Lengthening are not needed for forms like "cresce," whatever support they derive from other phonological phenomena. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Articulation (Speech), Consonants, Contrastive Linguistics, Generative Grammar
Arabski, Janusz – Glottodidactica, 1975
Deals with infinitives that occur with predicate adjectives. Syntactic relations occuring between Infinitive and Copula plus Adjective are examined with the aim of showing the Polish counterparts of English infinitives. (Author/RM)
Descriptors: Adjectives, Comparative Analysis, Contrastive Linguistics, Descriptive Linguistics

Coats, H. S.; Lightner, T. M. – Language, 1975
Transitive softening, or the shift of a dental or velar to a palato-alveolar, and the insertion of a palatalized /1/ after a labial, are examined. The older transformational cycle of Halle is set aside in favor of a morphological rule. Productive and non-productive verb classes are analyzed. (SC)
Descriptors: Descriptive Linguistics, Generative Phonology, Linguistic Theory, Morphology (Languages)
Gandour, Jack – PASAA: Notes and News about Language Teaching and Linguistics in Thailand, 1974
It is asserted that the glottal stop in Thai must be present in underlying forms, even though it could be derived by phonological rule. It is argued that unless the glottal stop is present in the underlying form, certain linguistically significant generalizations are either obscured or lost altogether. (RM)
