The latency at which objects could be identified by 126 subjects was compared through line drawings (edge-based) or color photography (surface depiction). The line drawing was identified about as quickly as the photograph; primal access to a mental representation of an object can be modeled from an edge-based description. (SLD)

Two experiments assessed the extent of newborns' ability to discriminate color. Results imply that newborns have some, albeit limited, capacity to discriminate chromatic from achromatic stimuli, and hence, are at least dichromats. (Author/DR)

Investigated changes in non-nutritive sucking behavior of premature infants when light stimulation was presented. Results generally support past evidence that premature infants are capable of making orienting and discriminative responses to visual stimuli and chronological age effects were indicated. (DP)

A study of the ability of young children to discriminate among such letters as p and q, d and b, using four different methods of discrimination (matching, copying, naming, and writing to dictation).
