Paivio, Allan; Cohen, Murray – 1977
This paper presents a study of eidetic imagery in children. An eidetic image refers to an afterimage which is both more vivid and longer lasting than other afterimages. The study attempts to analyze eidetic imagery as a psychometric problem and to relate it to other conceptually similar cognitive abilities. Two hundred forty-two second and third…

Williams, Kathleen; Turpin, Betty Ann M. – 1982
The purpose of this study was to explore how children use location and distance cues to reproduce movements as compared with adults. Subjects were three groups of children, aged 6, 8, and 10, and one group of adults. A linear slide was used by the blindfolded subjects to indicate one of two experimenter-defined stops. Distance and location were…

Puglisi, J. Thomas; Allegretti, Christine L. – 1981
Although numerous studies have indicated that older persons process visual information more slowly than younger persons, the precise nature of age-associated changes in the processing of visually presented information remains unclear. Older adults (N=18) and college students (N=18) performed a visual search task in which lists of words and…

Guay, Roland B. – 1978
Four factors have been reported in the literature as being related to spatial test performance. This study investigated the main and interaction effects of sex, handedness, birth order, and experience on three different types of spatial performance; surface development, object rotation, and coordination of viewpoints. A total of 217 undergraduate…

Cosgrove, J. Michael; Patterson, Charlotte J. – 1977
This study investigates the development of listener skills during childhood, and the effects of introducing a brief plan for effective listening on children's listener performances. The subjects were 96 children, 24 at each of four ages (four, six, eight, and ten years) who were asked to play the role of listener in a referential communication…

Tobin, Aileen Webb; Venezky, Richard L. – 1979
A previous study by Gibson et al. (1972) that investigated the effect of orthographic structure on letter search was replicated and extended in order to identify factors that might explain the apparent discrepancy between their results and those of comparable studies. Experiment one tested whether the discrepancy might be explained by difference…

Austin, Martha C. – 1971
This study investigated the relationship between cognitive style and the use of play areas in the nursery school. The participants were 28 preschool children (13 girls and 15 boys) attending the Laboratory Nursery School at the University of California at Davis. Each child was observed for 12 one-hour sessions over a 10-week period. A time…

Groffman, Sidney – 1970
An experimental test of visual closure based on an information-theory concept of perception was devised to test the ability to discriminate visual stimuli with reduced cues. The test is to be administered in a timed individual situation in which the subject is presented with sets of incomplete drawings of simple objects that he is required to name…

Rushing, Bill – Performance and Instruction, 1982
In a college biology class, a correlational study was used to describe the relationship between preferred learning styles (determined by the Modified Hill Cognitive Style Inventory), the use of videotapes, and test scores. Results show that the effectiveness of videotapes depends in part on the cognitive style of the student. (Author/JJD)

Chromiak, Walter; Weisberg, Robert W. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1981
Adults' ability to track a moving target was examined in two experiments in order to compare their performance with that of very young infants. Results indicated that (1) adults'"overshoot" errors resembled those reported for young infants; and (2) adults had problems tracking a moving target which unexpectedly changed direction. (Author/DB)

Rakover, Sam S.; Cahlon, Baruch – Cognitive Psychology, 1989
A technique and mathematical model--the "Catch Model"--for identifying a face previously seen are presented. Three experiments, involving a total of 38 American and 30 Israeli college students, supported the model for identification of a target face. Practical implications are discussed. (SLD)

Geringer, John M. – Journal of Research in Music Education, 1991
Presents the results of a study designed to test ability to discriminate sound intensity modulations. Examines time required for making correct discriminations of stimuli that increased, decreased, or remained the same in intensity. Concludes that both musicians and nonmusicians perceive intensity decreases more easily than increases. (DK)

Sheldon, Kennon M. – Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, 1996
The Social Awareness Inventory (SAI), which assesses individual differences in eight social-perceptual styles, is introduced and applied in three studies. The model is derived by crossing the three binary dimensions of target (self or other), perspective (own or other's), and content (overt appearance or covert experience). The SAI appears to…

Simcox, William A. – 1983
This investigation of cognitive effort begins with a review of cognitive principles relating to memory and graphic encoding of information. The cognitive framework described allows explanation of improved memory due to reparsing of graphic representations. It also provides the basis for optimizing graphical material design to insure best retention…
