Cherry, Flora F.; Eaton, Ethel L. – Child Development, 1977
Children of 200 low-income families were studied to determine possible deleterious outcomes due to maternal employment in the child's first 3 years of life. When 8-year follow-up data were controlled for maternal variables, 30 differences in outcomes were found, 27 of which favored children of workers. (Author/JMB)

Recent studies on the biological development of the prefrontal cortex in rhesus monkeys are reviewed. These studies have elucidated the basic neural circuitry underlying the delayed-response function in adult nonhuman primates and suggest that a critical mass of cortical synapses is important for the emergence of this cognitive function. Three self-report methods for rating secondary sexual characteristic growth were compared to physician ratings; the accuracy of self-reported height and weight was also assessed. The usefulness of the Pubertal Development Scale, Tanner ratings, and self-reported height and weight as adequate estimates of pubertal development is discussed. (PCB)

This study determined the relationship among 30 kindergarten children's perceptions of their competence, teachers' perceptions of the children's competence, and academic performance. Muscular and aerobic capacity changes resulting from three months of wrestling training were examined in a group of normally active seven- to nine-year-old boys. Wrestling training was found to improve strength in young boys, but it did not seem to improve aerobic capacity. (Author/DF)

Ershow, Abby G. – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1986
Growth in 28 black and 30 white children with Down syndrome was compared at birth, 4 months, 1 year, and 7 years. Results showed essentially identical growth rates and suggested that long-term growth of these children may be responsive to external influences, such as maternal smoking and maternal weight at delivery.
