Using Rotter's (1966) I-E scale, data were gathered on 204 college students. The findings not only contradict the sterotype that Mexican-Americans are fatalistic and controlled by external forces but they seem to suggest that their culture actually contributes to a greater perception of internal control. IQ tests were viewed solely as predictors in this investigation. The results revealed equal but very low within-ethnic-group correlations between IQ and achievement measures administered concurrently prior to desegregation and for tests administered one and two years following desegregation.
