Cadwallader, Martin – Journal of Geography, 1978
Illustrates the five elements of conceptual models by developing a model of consumer behavior in choosing among alternative supermarkets. The elements are: identifying the problem, constructing a conceptual model, translating it into a symbolic model, operationalizing the model, and testing. (Author/AV)

Brown, Lou; And Others – Journal of the Association for the Severely Handicapped (JASH), 1983
Issues related to the locations in which educational and related services are provided to severely handicapped students are addressed. It is argued that attending special education classes in chronological age appropriate regular schools close to home is in the best interest of students, their families, and the public. (Author/SEW)

Windley, Paul G. – Gerontologist, 1983
Presents utilization profiles for 15 community services among 989 elderly residents of 18 small Kansas towns. Distance estimates to most services used were greater than estimates to nearest service, frequency of use was inversely correlated with distance to services, and most elderly walked or drove themselves to services. (Author/JAC)

Keith, Pat M. – Omega: Journal of Death and Dying, 1981
Examined quantification of time remaining and perceived distance from death among 568 older men and women. A substantial proportion (49 percent) didn't quantify the remaining portion of life, and age did not prompt specification of time remaining. Demographic characteristics predicted perceived distance from death better than life changes or sex.…

And Others; Baird, John C. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 1979
This experiment tested the ability of people to recall the locations of buildings in a familiar campus setting. Ten graduate students represented the relative locations of buildings by pairwise distance judgments and by direct mapping of locations on a Tektronix cathode ray terminal. Both methods led to accurate judgments. (Author/CTM)

Baird, John C.; Merrill, Amanda A. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 1979
This experiment investigated preferences for the location of facilities in an ideal town. Ten graduate students represented the relative locations of facilities (home, school, factory) by two methods: (1) pairwise ideal distances on a 100-point scale and (2) direct planning of locations on a Tektronix cathode ray screen. (Author/CTM)

Wellens, A. Rodney; Goldberg, Myron L. – Journal of Psychology, 1978
Indicates that dyadic relationships are seen as less positive with increasing distances between members and with less direct physical orientation, though contributing factors show that such effects are not simply additive. Shows that sex differences distinguish the judgments that observers make about dyadic relationships. (RL)

Aiello, John R.; And Others – Child Development, 1979
Fourth-, eighth- and eleventh-grade children were exposed in groups of four to short-term conditions of high or moderate spatial density involving close physical proximity. Physiological responses were measured during this exposure, and afterwards subjects engaged in a cooperation-competition activity and provided self-reports related to their…

Stewart, Mac A.; Post, Phyllis – Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development, 1990
Examined factors which influence beginning college minority students' (n=332) decisions to attend a major midwestern university. Compared perceptions of Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, and Appalachian Whites. Found primary reason for attending university was proximity to home. (ABL)

Ferrington, Gary – Journal of Visual Literacy, 1994
This article suggests that the development of listening skills should extend to the "soundscape" of nonspeech acoustical information. It presents a model for effective aural processing, identifies categories of information obtained from nonverbal sound, and explores "ear-tuning" or listening exercises that use sound to glean…

Brekelmans, Mieke; Wubbels, Theo; van Tartwijk, Jan – International Journal of Educational Research, 2005
This contribution explores the relation of teacher experience with features of teacher-student relationships. Cross-sectional and longitudinal data were used to investigate this relation. The cross-sectional data set consisted of data on teacher-student relationships of over 6000 teachers with 1-36 years of experience. Teacher experience was…

Marks, Andrew – Higher Education: The International Journal of Higher Education and Educational Planning, 2005
This paper argues that the conceptions of "space" (and increasingly "time") in the discussion of "the university" (in its most transcendent sense) have gone through four distinct phases in the UK. Using a Heideggerian conception of "space" where usefulness is more important than proximity, the…

Jones, Todd C.; Bartlett, James C.; Wade, Kimberley A. – Journal of Memory and Language, 2006
Conjunction errors occur when participants incorrectly identify as "old" novel test stimuli created by recombining parts of two study stimuli (parent items). Prior studies have reported that the conjunction error rate is higher when parent items are studied together than when they are studied apart (a parent proximity effect). In several…
