Peer reviewedPaatsch, Louise E.; Blamey, Peter J.; Sarant, Julia Z.; Martin, Lois F.A.; Bow, Catherine P. – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2004
Open-set word and sentence speech-perception test scores are commonly used as a measure of hearing abilities in children and adults using cochlear implants and/or hearing aids. These tests ore usually presented auditorily with a verbal response. In the case of children, scores are typically lower and more variable than for adults with hearing…

Iverson, Jana M.; Hall, Amanda J.; Nickel, Lindsay; Wozniak, Robert H. – Brain and Language, 2007
This study examined changes in rhythmic arm shaking and laterality biases in infants observed longitudinally at three points: just prior to, at, and just following reduplicated babble onset. Infants (ranging in age from 4 to 9 months at babble onset) were videotaped at home as they played with two visually identical audible and silent rattles…

Mazefsky, Carla A.; Oswald, Donald P. – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 2007
This study compared emotion perception accuracy between children with Asperger's syndrome (AS) and high-functioning autism (HFA). Thirty children were diagnosed with AS or HFA based on empirically supported diagnostic criteria and administered an emotion perception test consisting of facial expressions and tone of voice cues that varied in…

Wijnen, Jasper G.; Ridderinkhof, K. Richard – Brain and Cognition, 2007
Previous research has shown that the appearance of task-irrelevant abrupt onsets influences saccadic eye movements during visual search and may slow down manual reactions to target stimuli. Analysis of reaction time distributions in the present study offers evidence suggesting that top-down inhibition processes actively suppress oculomotor or…

Marcos, Jose L. – Learning and Motivation, 2007
Great controversy exists on whether associative learning occurs without awareness. In Experiment 1, 31 participants received discrimination training by repeated presentations of two stimulus sequences (S1[subscript A] right arrow S2[subscript A], and S1[subscript B] right arrow S2[subscript B]), S1 being a masked stimulus. S2 were imperative…

Smutzer, Gregory; Sayed, Samir; Sayed, Nabil – American Biology Teacher, 2006
An increased understanding of olfaction and gustation has underlined the critical importance of these two chemical senses in determining how humans respond to their environment. In this article, recent advances in chemosensory research are summarized. The use of a smell identification test, an odor discrimination test, and a test for anosmia to a…

Peer reviewedMorris, William N.; Miller, Robert S. – Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, 1975
The present experiment tested the prediction made in a number of arguments presented in this article that a consensus-breaking partner will produce greater reduction in conformity than a consensus-preempting partner. (Author/RK)

CLIFTON, MARGUERITE A.; SMITH, HOPE M. – 1961
A STUDY WAS CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE IF ONE'S EXPRESSED CONCEPT OF HIS PERFORMANCE OF CERTAIN SELECTED MOTOR SKILLS IS CHANGED THROUGH THE PROCESS OF VIEWING MOTION PICTURES OF HIMSELF PERFORMING THESE SAME SKILLS. SIXTY-FIVE COLLEGE STUDENTS 17 TO 21 YEARS OF AGE, PARTICIPATED. EACH SUBJECT PERFORMED FIVE MOTOR SKILLS IN SEQUENCE (1) WALKED 30 FEET…

Tarte, Robert D.; Barritt, Loren S. – 1969
In the three studies reported here, an attempt was made to determine whether adult native speakers of English can agree on the choice of phonetic labels for visually presented geometric figures. It was the purpose of these studies to obtain evidence in support of the "phonetic symbolism" hypothesis. An initial study and two replications…

Smothergill, Daniel W. – 1971
Four papers on perceptual processes, by (1) W. Ahlbrand; (2) E. Elenbogen, S. Sperry and G. A. Thompson; (3) B. Randhawa; and (4) T. Sticht and D. Glasnapp, which were presented at the 55th annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association, are critiqued here. Emphasis is upon the relevance of the papers to issues in perceptual…

Rodenborn, Leo V., Jr. – 1972
The raw data collected in a study to determine the effect of attention in measuring visual perception are provided. A key to the 19 numerical headings of the raw data tabulation is given. Two pages of tables presented the raw data. (For related documents, see TM 002 116,117.) (DJ)

Price, James H.; And Others – Health Education (Washington D.C.), 1987
This study examined how students' perceptions of silhouette drawings of various weights would change when descriptors of Likert-like endpoints describing heavy and thin weights were changed. Subjects were 211 college students who completed one of five forms of a questionnaire differing only in endpoint descriptors. Results are discussed. (MT)

Peer reviewedHecht, Michael – Sex Roles, 1984
Volunteers rated perceived satisfaction with a conversation they had just completed or one they recalled on a 60-item self-report instrument. Results indicated that one's gender does not influence the amount of communication satisfaction one experiences, but mixed sex dyads are slightly more satisfying for both genders. (Author/KH)
