The health locus of control scale was used to compare mastectomy patients who received counseling to patients not receiving counseling. Posttreatment group means in the locus of control were accounted for by changes on the fate subscale. Validity of this scale for populations characterized by different health problems is discussed. Demonstrates that approach gradients can be steeper than avoidance gradients. An individual with an avoidance-approach conflict, placed on the goal side of the intersection of the gradients, would enthusiastically approach a goal previously avoided. Black and white subjects (N=80) of both sexes completed the Budner Intolerance of Ambiguity Scale and Hogan Scale for Empathy. Data from the standardization sample for the revised BSAG were submitted to principal components factor analysis with varimax rotation of significant factors. Graduate students rated counseling interviews using the Broverman Sex-Role Stereotype Questionnaire. Client sex was one factor and counselor sex was the other.
