Drawing upon results of interviews with 522 policemen in the black ghettos of 13 major cities in Spring, 1958, the authors speculate that by far most" of the white policeman's perception of black hostility is a projection of his own fears and prejudices, not legitimate reaction to actual hostility. A study of doctrinaire rhetoric and extremism which notes consistent patterns of thought and of audience-speaker interaction amoung diverse doctrinaire groups. Concludes that doctrine shapes rhetorical styles as well as content and suggests the possibility of interpreting and evaluating social phenomena through the analysis of rehetoric. (JB)

Pre-experimental predictions that an increase in grade would be paralleled by an increase in degree of meaning conditioning, in amount of awareness, and in amount of conditioning with awareness were not supported in this investigation, consideration of possible reasons for such a result help clarify the nature of meaning conditioning.
