This study focuses on whether external family ties exist as supportive networks by comparing a probability sample of 200 low-income Black females with 371 of their White counterparts. Contradictory evidence is offered regarding the availability and utilization of supportive kin networks by the two groups studied. (Author/EB)

Sets of randomly generated numbers are used to produce simulated data sets to illustrate that high heritability of a property within each of two populations may be consistent with a vanishingly small heritability in the combined population.
