Since rural society experiences social changes more gradually than urban society, the actual stresses are different in nature. Two areas of conflict are identification of sex-role function and the nature of the interaction within the extended kinship network. (Author)

Data collected in 1977 from 992 households in 37 fast-growing nonmetropolitan counties in the Upper Great Lakes Region show that newcomers over time tend to become as involved in their new communities as the oldtimers and socioeconomic status positively affects levels of formal community participation for both migrants and residents. Students attending Southeastern Louisiana University and Abilene Christian University (Texas) responded to questions about the amount of sex education they had received and their views about the importance of and place for sex education. The significance of a religious background for attitudes about sex education is discussed. (PP)

Compared women (N=25) in nontraditional careers with women (N=25) in the traditional field of teaching. Differences between the groups suggested that those entering a traditional career made their decision earlier in life than those choosing a nontraditional career. Similarities were found between the two groups. (RC)

A study was conducted to determine variables which would predict smoking among 297 seventh graders and to test the validity of the variables in a followup one year later. The most valid predictors were number of friends and siblings who smoked and the intention to smoke in the future. (PP)

Children's occupational choices were scored for complexity using the code numbers of the Occupational Titles. Findings indicated a positive relationship between socioeconomic status and complexity of data manipulation in occupational choices and greater complexity of interaction with things in the occupational choices of boys. Wolff has recently reinterpreted the data of Lee to indicate that Black migration from the south to Philadelphia had been selective in an IQ-relevant manner. However, Wolff's deduction from Lee's data is shown to depend entirely upon an assumption about cumulative IQ deficit in southern Black children. (Author/CTM)

Kamin has contended that arguments presented in Wolff are too weak to justify selective migration. Although Kamin's critique points up the need for closer scrutiny of the cumulative-deficit phenomenon, it fails to refute Wolff's conclusion that selective migration is partly responsible for the North-South Black IQ differential. Although women's choices of certain occupations may be perceived as nontraditional, these women make choices congruent with their immediate environment. Environmental factors include maternal employment, paternal achievement behavior, parent attitudes, socioeconomic status, family size, and peer influence. (RC)

Junior high students were tested to supply normative data supporting the Bender Gestalt. Subject's performance was not significantly related to sex or occupation of the family bread winner. These variables do not have to be controlled for in norming visual motor tests at the junior high level. (Author)

Parents, like teachers, must make every effort to create environments that are physically, socially, and emotionally conducive to self-exploration and communication. Schools should be more responsive to parents and more willing to provide nonacademic services and information to the family. (JAC)
