Peer reviewedPrice, James M.; Nicewander, W. Alan – Psychometrika, 1977
A simpler and more complete version of Kaiser's method for finding a set of derived orthogonal variables which correlate maximally with a set of original variables is presented. The method is compared to related factor analytic transformations. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Factor Analysis, Oblique Rotation, Orthogonal Rotation
Peer reviewedBentler, P. M.; Wingard, Joseph A. – Psychometrika, 1977
A scale-invariant simple structure function of previously studied function components for principal component analysis and factor analysis is defined. First and second partial derivatives are obtained, and Newton-Raphson iterations are utilized. The resulting solutions are locally optimal and subjectively pleasing. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Calculus, Factor Analysis, Matrices, Oblique Rotation
Peer reviewedBentler, P. M. – Psychometrika, 1977
A scale-invariant index of factorial simplicity is proposed as a summary statistic for principal components and factor analysis. The index ranges from zero to one, and attains its maximum when all variables are simple rather than factorially complex. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Factor Analysis, Oblique Rotation, Orthogonal Rotation
Peer reviewedArbuckle, James; Friendly, Michael – Psychometrika, 1977
This paper develops a procedure for transforming an arbitrary set of component reference curves to a new set which are mutually orthogonal and, subject to orthogonality, are as smooth as possible in a well defined (least squares) sense. Potential applications to learning data, electrophysiological responses, and growth data are indicated.…

Peer reviewedLeckliter, Ingrid N.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1986
Reviews the factor analytic studies done on the 1981 Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) standardization sample and various patient samples. Concludes that a three-factor solution appears to provide a source of hypotheses about an individual's or a select sample's unique abilities and weaknesses worthy of further exploration.…
Descriptors: Factor Analysis, Factor Structure, Statistical Studies
Peer reviewedPowers, Stephen – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1984
This paper describes a microcomputer program that extracts principal components from a correlation matrix and rotates them to a varimax solution. Eigenvalues, variances associated with each component, unrotated component loadings, and varimax rotated loadings are output by the program. (Author)

Peer reviewedConger, Anthony J.; Stallard, Eric – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1976
Maximally reliable composites found in canonical reliability when expressed in the form of a canonical factor analysis solution are shown to have highly desirable data reduction properties. Theoretical relationships among canonical factor analysis, principal components analysis and canonical reliability analysis are emphasized. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Factor Analysis, Matrices, Multivariate Analysis, Reliability
Arnau, Randolph C. – 1998
This paper presents the methodology for performing and interpreting second-order factor analysis. Procedures for extracting and rotating solutions are presented. Critical issues of interpretation, such as interpreting second-order factors are discussed. Two methods for accomplishing this are explained, including multiplying the first- and…

VandenBosch, Dawn – 2001
This paper explains the types of entities that can be analyzed using two-mode factor analysis and the techniques associated with each variation. It also provides an in-depth review and example of one of the most popular variations, the Q-technique. Even when researchers have multiple variables, multiple people, and multiple occasions of…

Peer reviewedKaiser, Henry F.; Rice, John – Journal of Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1974
In this paper three changes and one new development for the method of exploratory factor analysis (a second generation Little Jiffy) developed by Kaiser are described. Following this short description a step-by-step computer algorithm of the revised method, dubbed Little Jiffy, Mark IV is presented. (MP)

Peer reviewedTucker, Ledyard R. – Psychometrika, 1971
Considers the external characteristics of four methods for determining factor score estimates; that is, relations of these estimates to measures on attributes not entered into the factor analysis. (DG)
