To study development of social speech, 18 dyads of children, ages 3 1/2 to 5, were videotaped in 15-minute play sessions. Results suggest that early forms of social speech entail a surprising level of interpersonal understanding, and that these speech forms are amenable to systematic study. (ST)

Three studies of the 4-year-old's ability to adjust to a listener are reported. Tape recordings were made of conversations with a 2-year-old, peers, and adults. Results revealed that the younger the listener, the greater the tendency for the 4-year-old to use short, simple utterances and to make efforts to attract and sustain attention. (ST)
