Kelley, Kathryn – Journal of Research in Personality, 1982
Predicted interpersonal attraction to the novel stimulus by assessing the affective properties of stimulus descriptions. One group responded to characterizations on scales of concern. In another group, positive feelings and high concern about the stimulus led to greatest attraction. Results illustrate the benefits of prediction of the liking…

Gardner, Don E. – Research in Higher Education, 1981
The merits of double exponential smoothing are discussed relative to other types of pattern-based enrollment forecasting methods. The basic assumptions and formulas for its use are outlined. The difficulties associated with selecting an appropriate weight factor are discussed, and the potential effect on prediction results is illustrated.…

Grambs, Jean Dresden – Educational Leadership, 1981
Ponders the transitory nature of some educational innovations, the resistence of the school system to outside forces, and two conditions without precedence: the reality of nuclear weapons and the women's movement. (MLF)

Allen, Walter P. – Research in the Teaching of English, 1980
Concludes that, by using an easily constructed Cloze test based on the reading material in a college literature class for foreign students, a teacher can make fairly accurate predictions at the beginning of the semester about students' probability of success in the course. (GT)

Mugford, Stephen; Darroch, Dorothy B. – Journal of Marriage and the Family, 1980
Occupational success is associated with single status but the relationship is not statistically significant. The relationship between education and single status, however, is significant. Results suggest that single status results from educational success. (Author)

Malgady, Robert G.; And Others – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1980
The validity of the Vocational Adaptation Rating Scale (VARS) for predicting placement of 125 mentally retarded workers in sheltered workshop settings was investigated. Results indicated low to moderate significant partial correlations with concurrent placement and one year follow-up placement (controlling IQ, age, and sex). (Author)

Dawson, Graham – Economics, 1980
Examines claims that economics is not a science, that it is not value-free and that it cannot yield objective knowledge. Arguments are based on claims recently presented by R. Helm ('Values in Economics,'"Economics," v15 part I Spr 1979). (DB)

Krueger, Richard A. – Journal of Extension, 1980
Describes the use of computer simulation, based on analysis of data collected from homemakers in the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program, to predict participant performance and project the cost effectiveness of alternatives. Discusses the usefulness of simulation as a management and instructional tool. (SK)

Mitchell, M. C., Jr. – Journal of Instructional Development, 1980
Examines notion of algorithms and describes variety of roles they take in educational endeavors. Problems in their development and application are explored, and implications for future use and research are presented. References are included. (BK)

McCluskey, Jimmy; Womack, Farris – Southern College Personnel Association Journal, 1980
Regression equations were formulated to determine the predictability of the College Level Examination Program performance from ACT scores. Equation strength prompted further investigation to determine if a relationship could be established. The tally matrix from which probabilities were computed was found to be effective for predictive purposes.…

Murphy, R. J. L. – British Journal of Educational Psychology, 1981
This investigation studied the relationship between both GCE O-level examination grades and teachers' estimates of A-level examination grades, and actual A-level grades obtained by a sample of university applicants. Moderate levels of correlation were reported in both cases, although teachers' estimates appeared to be slightly better predictors.…

Carrig, Thomas R. – American School and University, 1979
The need to conserve fuel will influence future bus designs. Technological advances will be required to meet anticipated government mandates for quieter, safer, more fuel efficient vehicles with lower emission levels. (Author/MLF)

Clum, George A.; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1979
Suggests secondary parasuicide prevention is the most viable path for future research. Aggressive case findings and primary prevention approaches have failed to reduce suicide attempt rates. A secondary prevention model, based on factors predictive of parasuicide, was developed. Stress reduction and cognitive restructuring were primary goals of…

Lewis, Ann – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1980
The English Picture Vocabulary Test and the Croydon Checklist (for teachers) were used for screening along with a standardized reading test to measure the predictive validity of the screening instruments. Results indicated that a number of children were misclassified and reasons for this, such as teachers' misconceptions, are discussed. (PHR)
