Peer reviewedJohnson, Jeanne M.; And Others – Applied Psycholinguistics, 1992
Examination of the spoken English development of a hearing child whose deaf parents used American Sign Language (ASL) identified a consistent but not extensive ASL influence on simultaneity of expression, undifferentiated versus differentiated features, bound versus free morpheme mechanisms, and word order. (47 references) (Author/CB)

Peer reviewedOtomo, Kiyoshi; Stoel-Gammon, Carol – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1992
This study investigated developmental patterns of acquisition of the unrounded U.S. English vowels, by following 6 normally developing children from 22 to 30 months of age. Three classes of production errors were identified: intertrial production variability, context-sensitive substitutions, and context-free systematic substitution patterns.…

Peer reviewedChin, Steven B.; Dinnsen, Daniel A. – Journal of Child Language, 1992
Compares patterns of cluster realization from 47 children ranging in age from 3;4 to 6;8 with functional (nonorganic) speech disorders with those reported in the literature for normal acquisition and reveals that these patterns are essentially the same for both groups. (33 references) (GLR)
Descriptors: Child Language, Comparative Analysis, Consonants, Language Acquisition
Peer reviewedBear, Donald R. – Visible Language, 1991
Examines the relationship between stages of orthographic development and writing fluency. Finds that the graphemic output lexicon of beginning readers and writers is not sufficiently detailed to allow a fluent output. (PRA)
Descriptors: Beginning Reading, Beginning Writing, Elementary Education, Language Acquisition
Peer reviewedBrown, Victoria – Youth Theatre Journal, 1992
Describes a study in which drama and sign language were used in a multisensory approach to language learning to tap the physical, kinesthetic, and visual abilities of four-year-old Head Start children. Descriptors: Class Activities, Drama, Instructional Effectiveness, Language Acquisition
Peer reviewedWeismer, Susan Ellis – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1991
This study, which assessed hypothesis-testing abilities using a discrimination-learning paradigm, found that 16 language-impaired primary-level children solved fewer problems than 16 controls equated on cognitive level, but the 2 groups used similar hypothesis types to solve the problems. Type of verbal feedback (explicit versus nonexplicit) did…

Peer reviewedHemmer, Virginia Hoey; Ratner, Nan Bernstein – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1994
The communicative abilities of six sets of same-sex, preschool dizygotic twins were examined. In each dyad, one sibling had a strong history of recurrent otitis media (ROM) but the other twin did not. History of ROM was associated with lowered receptive vocabulary, with no consistent effects detected in expressive speech and language tasks.…

Peer reviewedRettig, M. – Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness, 1994
This review of the literature examines characteristics of the play of young children with visual impairments and suggests areas for intervention. The review notes that the deficits in symbolic play commonly exhibited by these children are related to language deficits and that intervention should focus on enhancing the child's sense of self.…
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Early Intervention, Language Acquisition, Play
Peer reviewedBates, Elizabeth; And Others – Journal of Child Language, 1994
Provides evidence for developmental changes in the composition of the lexicon, reflecting a shift in emphasis from reference, to predication, to grammar. Findings show that the study of qualitative variation in lexical style is confounded by quantitative variation in rate of lexical development. Tables are appended. (Contains 42 references.) (JP)
Descriptors: Child Language, Developmental Stages, Grammar, Infants
Peer reviewedLiles, Betty Z. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1993

Peer reviewedGrievink, Eefje H.; And Others – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1993
This follow-up study to the Nijmegen Otitis Media study evaluated 270 children (age 7). A history of otitis media with effusion (OME), even up to nine instances, did not have negative consequences for language performance at age seven. Intermittent, as opposed to more continuous, OME was not found to affect language ability negatively. (Author/JDD)
Descriptors: Biological Influences, Chronic Illness, Diseases, Early Childhood Education
Peer reviewedMedcalf-Davenport, Neva Ann – Early Child Development and Care, 1993
A study found no significant difference between the general world knowledge and achievement test scores of kindergartners who had been in day care and kindergartners who had been in home care. Attempts to establish a parallel between Economic and Industrial Understanding (EIU) and language; and to discover how to teach children EIU while taking into consideration their stage of language development.
