Seventy per cent of a random sample of 350 faculty of a small state university returned questionnaires revealing agreement on teaching as the most important faculty role, with character-building second, and research third. A study of New Jersey elementary schools revealed that the perceived authenticity of the principal's behavior was significantly related to the openness of the school's climate and to the humanism in the school's pupil-control orientation.
