The time between asking a question and accepting an answer or proceeding with the lesson is reported for five lessons for four instructors. There was little change during four weeks of instructor-supervisor conferences intended to alter questioning techniques. (AL)

Nine eighth grade classes were examined to identify the nature, distribution and patterning of verbal discourse. Included are a description of the categories used (Smith and Meux), a description of the nature of the verbal interaction in science lessons, and a resulting comparison between Australian, American, and New Zealand teachers. As predicted, approval dependent" persons were more likely to rationalize or excuse the failure" by blaming various experimental factors and/or their partners, but this was always done within the limits of a generalized tendency to seek social acceptance by expressing attitudes complimentary to other persons or situations. To encourage continuity in group process, audiotape playback was done of a discussion session on the previous group session, by the counselor and a participant. This proved to be a successful technique for involving all group members in the group experience. (CJ)

Results obtained with three methods of measuring three functional roles in initially leaderless small groups were factor analyzed.
