Schiller, Shu Z. – Journal of Information Systems Education, 2009
Guided by the principles of learner-centered teaching methodology, a Second Life project is designed to engage students in active learning of virtual commerce through hands-on experiences and teamwork in a virtual environment. More importantly, an assessment framework is proposed to evaluate the learning objectives and learning process of the…

Klopfer, Eric; Scheintaub, Hal; Huang, Wendy; Wendel, Daniel; Roque, Ricarose – E-Learning, 2009
StarLogo The Next Generation (TNG) enables secondary school students and teachers to model decentralized systems through agent-based programming. TNG's inclusion of a three-dimensional graphical environment provides the capacity to create games and simulation models with a first-person perspective. The authors theorize that student learning of…

Twining, Peter – British Journal of Educational Technology, 2009
This paper describes and reflects on the development of the Schome Park Programme (SPP), which was established with the specific aim of extending our thinking about schome, which aims to be the optimal educational system for the 21st century. In an earlier stage of the Schome Initiative, it became clear that people find it almost impossible to…

Blignaut, Seugnet; Nagel, Lynette – Computers & Education, 2009
Higher education institutions deliver web-based learning with varied success. The success rate of distributed online courses remains low. Factors such as ineffective course facilitation and insufficient communication contribute to the unfulfilled promises of web-based learning. Students consequently feel unmotivated. Instructor control and in the…

Klockars, Alan J.; Hancock, Gregory R. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1994
Differences between per experiment (PE) and experimentwise (EW) error rates were studied through simulation for several multiple-comparison procedures for both pairwise comparisons and planned contrasts. Results suggest ways to control PE rates through new multiple-comparison procedures that maximize experimental power while controlling Type I…

Flexser, Arthur J.; Tulving, Endel – Psychological Review, 1993
This article shows that D. L. Hintzman's criticism of the Tulving-Wiseman function is based on an unjustified assumption that is implicit in his simulation procedure, an assumption that is at variance with empirical facts. A more appropriate hypothesis makes the discrepancy between average maximum and algebraic maximum disappear. (SLD)

Zimmerman, Donald W. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1998
Uses computer simulation to study the effects on parametric and nonparametric statistical tests when assumptions of normality and homogeneity of variance are violated. Results reveal that nonparametric methods are not always acceptable substitutes for parametric methods in research studies when parametric assumptions are not satisfied. (SLD)

Groessler, Andreas; Maier, Frank H.; Milling, Peter M. – Simulation & Gaming, 2000
Discussion of computer-based simulations for business focuses on adding transparency through system dynamics techniques. Describes an experiment that evaluated the relevance and the effects of providing structural transparency to users of business simulators and suggests further research. (Contains 51 references.) Olejnik, Stephen; Mills, Jamie; Keselman, Harvey – Journal of Experimental Education, 2000
Evaluated the use of Mallow's C(p) and Wherry's adjusted R squared (R. Wherry, 1931) statistics to select a final model from a pool of model solutions using computer generated data. Neither statistic identified the underlying regression model any better than, and usually less well than, the stepwise selection method, which itself was poor for…

Wolfe, Joseph; Luethge, Denise J. – Journal of Education for Business, 2003
Some game users have contended that students can be successful in games even if they "know little" about the rules and the underlying business theories driving them. Thus, if teams are uninvolved, it is possible that successful game play may not impart the learning typically found in experiential exercises nor that designed into games by their…

Keh, Huan-Chao; Wang, Kuei-Min; Wai, Shu-Shen; Huang, Jiung-yao; Hui, Lin; Wu, Ji-Jen – International Journal of Distance Education Technologies, 2008
Distance learning in advanced military education can assist officers around the world to become more skilled and qualified for future challenges. Through well-chosen technology, the efficiency of distance-learning can be improved significantly. In this paper we present the architecture of Advanced Military Education-Distance Learning (AME-DL)…

Supasorn, Saksri; Suits, Jerry P.; Jones, Loretta L.; Vibuljan, Sunanta – Chemistry Education Research and Practice, 2008
Many students perform extraction experiments without connecting relevant molecular features to corresponding macroscopic features. Two versions of an Organic Extraction Simulation, one with text "captions" and the other with "narration" accompanying the animation, were developed based on a cognitive view of multimedia learning.…

Johnson, H. Dean; Evans, Marc A. – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 2008
Understanding the concept of the sampling distribution of a statistic is essential for the understanding of inferential procedures. Unfortunately, this topic proves to be a stumbling block for students in introductory statistics classes. In efforts to aid students in their understanding of this concept, alternatives to a lecture-based mode of…
